Thad Kopec is a person of transience; someone who imagines that by moving freely through the layers of his life, he can become more aware the present reality.
This disposition of curiosity is what informs his work. Kopec’s music is curious both in lyricism and composition, and it moves freely through moods and moments as if in acceptance of the nature of change itself.
Sound is shaped to have the feeling of passing time, or as he sees it, a flowing river. Everything is connected, but each moment flows into another universe of experience entirely. This, as Kopec sees it, is our experience of time as humans, and music is a practice in being present to the current of time.
Thad Kopec has been releasing albums under his name since 2012. He composes for film, produces albums, and is a founding member of Model Tenant, Blous, and The Radial Conservatory. He has worked with Liza Anne, Keeps, October Tooth, Groh - among others in his community of artists.
In 2016, Joseph Barrios was at an impasse. After performing as a hired gun for years around Nashville he felt he was going down a path of creative stagnation. Following the break up of his own group, 12th Street Social Club, and a sabbatical from making music altogether, Barrios felt a yearning to wander off this path and discover a new sense of identity. The meticulous tightrope between musicianship and technology forged a new relationship with music for Barrios, and thus JONIE was born.
This newly blossomed freedom spawned experiments with synthesizers and samplers that would lead to eccentric hip hop beats and Chicago inspired house music, all spewing out of his kitchen studio. Dance music for indieheads is the essence of JONIE’s brand of electro-pop. It features a dexterous energy that channels the synth-laden dance anthems of Neon Indian with the melodic soundscapes of Passion Pit. The debut single “Cherry 7up” twists classic pop nostalgia with introspective ambient overtones.
JONIE’s path down his solo pop foray has only just begun with the first installment of his Jonie Tapes Collection.
