Born Of Osiris

Many religions, cultures, and stories attribute power to the number three. In Egyptian mythology, it symbolizes plurality, and “triads” of deities comprise a complete system. It’s no surprise that the god Osiris was born to one such triad alongside siblings Horus and Isis. It’s also not a coincidence that Chicago heavy metal quintet Born Of Osiris found a similar significance within that number on their fifth full-length album, Soul Sphere [Sumerian Records]. In fact, over the course of 12 tracks, the record examines three tiers originally uncovered in a dream that Joe Buras [clean vocals, synthesizers, keyboards] shared.

“The whole story of the record involves three levels,” explains Joe. “The first one is The Binding. You’re hanging, and you’re stagnant. The second is The Fight. You were hanging, but now you’re pulling away from this linchpin, whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual. The final is The Release. You break away and feel free, connected, and loved.”
In order to properly explore the “tiers,” the group—Joe, Ronnie Canizaro [vocals], Cameron Losch [drums], David Da Rocha [bass], and Lee McKinney [guitar]—strengthened their bond exponentially. Since 2007, these five individuals have played countless shows alongside everybody from Judas Priest and Rob Zombie to Bring Me The Horizon and Killswitch Engage in addition to festivals such as Warped Tour, Mayhem Festival, and Music As A Weapon. After each album since their debut landed in the Top 100, including fan favorites A Higher Place [2009] and The Discovery [2011], 2013’s Tomorrow We Die ∆live earned the band their highest Billboard Top 200 debut, reaching #27 and selling over 13,000 copies first-week. After another marathon of touring, the guys headed to Michigan to write what would become Soul Sphere. They then hit the studio with Nick Sampson recording drums and added keys and effects, Lee handling production for guitars and bass, and Allen Hassler for vocals. They managed to click like never before, by drawing on nearly a decade of Born of Osiris.

“Over the years, you get better at creating, writing, and recording in the studio,” says Ronnie. “You improve each time you make an album. Once we had the direction, it started gelling.”
Born Of Osiris preceded the album with the fiery chant of “Throw Me In The Jungle,” showcasing their anthemic side. The follow-up “Resilience” evinced another angle. Its gnashing polyrhythmic guitars collide with orchestral electronics and a forceful and fiery refrain, tapping into the band’s hallmarks while fortifying the attack. “We wanted to use that title for so long,” Joe goes on. “Collectively, we’ve had so much resilience, going through different friendships and changes over the years but still maintaining our connection amongst us.”Then there’s “Illuminate,” which tempers a wall of distortion with a big chorus. The third single “Goddess of the Dawn” snaps from a thick groove punctuated by pinch harmonics before an entrancing clean hook. “We talk about feeling lost, finding yourself, and opening up to love,” says Joe. “It’s all three tiers in one song. As far as the title goes, the Native Americans referred to Aurora Borealis as ‘Goddess of the Dawn’ before they knew what it was. Many cultures and religions would actually worship it.”

Soul Sphere could only by conjured by a group of musicians so personally distinct. Beyond Born Of Osiris, each member continues to enrich his own sphere. In addition to being a partnered Twitch gamer and streamer, Lee is involved in multiple music projects, spanning electronic dance music and progressive rock. His solo guitar project landed in the Top 10 of the Rock Chart alongside System of a Down and Black Sabbath. David runs his own jewelry line D A V I and remains an avid fisherman. Cameron splits his time between drum lessons and composition. Joe oversees and designs the band’s stage production, aesthetic, and lighting, and Ronnie envisions the sweeping sci-fi concepts inside the lyrics and inspiring the artwork. “This group is five best friends together,” adds Ronnie. “We’re all different, and that makes something cool. Not every band has the closeness we do. We’ve all known each other since high school.”

Ultimately, Born Of Osiris relay a crucial message here, together. “I hope people feel creative and want to make their own art after hearing this,” Joe leaves off. “It might get them off their couches and off their phones to really dive into something and challenge themselves.”

Chelsea Grin

A Chelsea Grin in soccer hooligan terminology is the act of cutting a rivals mouth with either a credit card or blade and then kicking them in the crotch so their mouth muscles split into a bloody grimace. Chelsea Grin, the band from Utah armed with THREE guitarists use a foundation of hardcore grit combined with death metal technicality and grind speed to produce as much aural harm as the back alley jaw split. The band is the premiere artist on Artery Recordings, a new imprint of Razor & Tie Entertainment, and are releasing their debut full-length Desolation Of Eden this February. The album will hit in the midst of the band's two month run with The Red Chord and My Children My Bride (dates on following page). Artery Recordings is the recording arm of The Artery Foundation who are the management team responsible for jumpstarting the careers of Whitechapel, The Devil Wears Prada, A Day To Remember, Attack Attack! and Impending Doom. Speaking on why Chelsea Grin get the Artery seal of approval, Eric Rushing, President of the company says "The first time I saw this band I was completely blown away and the crowd interaction was just as intense, it reminded me of the first time I saw Whitechapel. This band is very young and the kids are already loving them coast to coast. Very excited about their debut!"

Desolation Of Eden was tracked at Lambesis Studios owned by Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying and bares the hallmarks of Chelsea Grin's devastating live show. Songs like the title track and Sonnet Of The Wretched utilize the double bass drumming, three guitar attack, ultra low bass frequencies and wraith-like vocals into a wall of sound to devastating effect. Brutatlity aside what separates the band from many of their contemporaries according to Jaek (guitar) is "obviously our age, we are a very young band being mostly 18 and 19. I know a lot of people have an impression on metal bands is that they are big, burly dudes with beards and not very approachable. We pretty much are the opposite of that, we are always hanging out with the fans at shows because we are them! Teenagers that like heavy music and hanging out."

Age aside Chelsea Grin is made up of Alex (vocals), Michael (guitar), Andrew (drums), Dan (guitar), David (bass) and Jaek, and have completed feats that bands existing twice as long have not. Forming from the ashes of Ahaziah, Chelsea Grin got active in March 2008. "Right after we formed we recorded our first EP made up of five songs and started playing local shows. Soon after we signed to a small indie called Statik Factory and released a single called Recreant and did a small west coast tour in June of that year. The following month Statik Factory released our EP. Very quickly after that our Myspace page was getting hits from around the country and we found ourselves not only being established in Utah but kids all over were writing us and listening to us."

Speaking on the obvious development between the earlier songs and the audio crushing output of Desolation Of Eden Jaek comments "Lyrically we have matured quite a bit, when we wrote the EP a lot of our early lyrics dealt with betrayal by females that we didn't think very fondly of. A lot of younger males could relate those lyrics to ex-girlfriends, friends whatever. However after our experiences of freedom within this band, I find a lot of our songs are about breaking away from voices of authority and ultimately living life the way you want to live it. We also re-recorded our older songs Recreant and Cheyne Stokes so the brutal songs will still be there (laughs)."
Chelsea Grin has completed tours with Arsonists Get All The Girls, A Plea For Purging, American Me, Dr.Acula, Attila and Within The Ruins and shared stages with Suicide Silence, Parkway Drive, My Children My Bride.

Make Them Suffer

Make Them Suffer is an Australian deathcore band from Perth, currently signed to Rise Records. Their debut album Neverbloom peaked at No. 56 on the ARIA Album charts in June 2012, while its follow up Old Souls debuted at No. 30 upon release in May 2015. After the band signed with Rise, the label released an expanded version of Old Souls in August 2016, containing also the EP Lord of Woe (originally self-released in 2010) and a new track, "Ether". Their 3rd studio album 'Worlds Apart' was released through Rise Records on 28th July 2017.

Kingdom of Giants

Kingdom of Giants is a 6 piece Metalcore band from Northern CA. Established in 2011, they have relentlessly been touring in The USA, Canada, and Europe, with bands such as Volumes, Fit For A King, Phinehas, and I, The Breather. Their first major album, "Ground Culture" was produced by Andreas Magnusson (Haste The Day, The Black Dahlia Murder, Fit For A King) and released after signing to InVogue Records in the fall of 2014.

In a genre / age where recording quality is at an all time best, Kingdom Of Giants excel in translating this quality to a high energy, organic, live experience. The band is composed of Dana Willax (Vocalist), Max Bremer (Guitarist), Red Martin (Guitarist), Julian Perez (Guitarist), Levi Norris (Bassist), and Truman Berlin (Drummer).

The band does a great job of keeping their albums interesting from start to finish. Each song sounds much different than the previous, but they are able to capture one overall feeling of cohesiveness throughout. Songs like the title track, "Ground Culture" or "Endure" seem to portray what the band is all about, while others like, "Sky Burial" and "Virtue" show just how dynamic their sound really is.
