“One of the best and most original guitarists in America”—Rolling Stone
Cure the Winter doldrums with guitarist extraordinaire Gary Lucas at Colony Woodstock – Feb. 22
Gary Lucas, while still in college, collaborated with Leonard Bernstein and then spent five years playing guitar with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. Gary has played and collaborated with Jeff Buckley (co-writer of “Grace” and “Mojo Pin”), Lou Reed, John Cale, Nick Cave, David Johansen, jazz greats Steve Swallow, Roswell Rudd, Joe Lovano, and Dave Liebman, Patti Smith, Peter Stampfel, Joan Osborne (co-writer of the GRAMMY nominated “Spider Web”), Matthew Sweet, Iggy Pop, Van Dyke Parks, Bryan Ferry, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Bobby Neuwirth, John Sebastian, Allen Ginsburg, Dr. John, Graham Parker, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), and many more.
Recently named one of Downbeat Magazine’s “Hot 66 6-Stringers”, Gary’s band, Gods and Monsters, was called “a 21 st century Cream” by Rolling Stone and after hearing his music, Esquire wrote, “Gary Lucas has apparently grown extra fingers”.
Mr. Lucas will be presenting his highly acclaimed solo acoustic performance at Colony Woodstock on February 22, 2019. Don’t miss this rare intimate appearance by one of the truly great guitarists alive today (“Lucas is a modern guitar miracle”—Rolling Stone).
His fingerpicking is legendary (“Awesome fingerpicking skills”—The Japan Times) and he is a virtual one-man band. In his hands, an acoustic guitar becomes a small orchestra. He recently galvanized the UN by performing his solo acoustic arrangement of Leos Janacek’s “On An Overgrown Path”. Allegro before the General Assembly on International Holocaust Remembrance Day Jan. 27th 2017.
His solo acoustic concerts are a tour de force, spanning the length and breadth of Gary’s Grammy-nominated songwriting with his original songs, his signature songs co-written with Jeff Buckley (“Grace” and “Mojo Pin”), the music Gary performed with Captain Beefheart, his arrangements of classical music by Dvorak, Wagner and Janacek, jazz compositions by Duke Ellington and Albert Ayler, country blues by Skip James and Robert Johnson, 1930’s Chinese pop, Rolling Stones hits, film themes from Jacques Tati and Bela Tarr films, standards by George Gershwin and Cole Porter, Jewish children’s music, and much much more.
