Ice Choir

Somewhere, amongst abstract romantic lyricism and pointilized synthesizer pastiche, THE ICE CHOIR proposes to you, the listener, a most unfavorable "pop" experience: imaginative songcraft minus the cool factor. Leaning heavily on the crumbling pillars of 1980's technopop production aesthetic, this is music that is both distinctly modern in composition and cripplingly esoteric. Waylaying melodies to mislead and seduce. Sentiments both saccharine and surreal.
Formless constructs playing you out of THAT weird dream and into your cold reality.

New Jersey / New York based project Limited plays a brand of dream pop that's heavy on the pop, albeit a highly mechanical version of it. It's a sound built on contrast: a juxtaposition of the mechanized, danceable grooves of the New Romantics and walls of noise-gaze guitar layers. On their debut single, Limited is NJ-native Alex Craig, who has also done time in Slumberland Records indie-pop act Big Troubles as well as the live incarnation of Ducktails, but has since expanded to a band which includes Ariel Zambenedetti and Eric Shaw. The "double A-sided" single, released on Matthew Mondanile's (Ducktails, Real Estate) New Images imprint, features "You Must Be Dreaming" b/w "New Day Rising": two pop anthems which shroud sequenced rhythms and bubblegum choruses in a thick sheet of warm static that runs through the whole thing. The "Hi-NRG" arrangements inject some welcome liveliness into an otherwise often sleepy genre. Meanwhile, the filter of static abstraction forces the listener to dig just a little deeper for the hooks, making them all the more rewarding.
