Matt La Von
Saxophonist Matt La Von, a veteran of the New York City and Brooklyn jazz scenes, celebrates the DAJ Records release of his newest album and debut recording as a bandleader and principal composer. Joining him in a set of all original compositions from the album, as well as the debut performance of a couple brand new compositions, will be Jay Sawyer on drums, Nitzan Gavrieli on piano, Devin Starks on bass, and Bobby Spellman on trumpet. The new record entitled “Found” was written as an expression of gratitude after overcoming a difficult period in his life, and stylistically, it is an attempt to harken back to the type of jazz composition made popular by such greats as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard, among others—a compositional approach that places a larger emphasis on strong rhythmic and melodic themes that also serve as improvisational vehicles, but with a modern slant.
“La Von is an engaging composer and an intriguing soprano saxophone player, with an original voice echoing all the great interpreters of this challenging instrument, ranging from Steve Lacey to, of course, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane…”
-Marco Cangiano The New York City Jazz Record
