Sea-Wife -- A Staged Reading Benefiting Season of Concern

First Flight presents a stage reading of Maxwell Anderson's never produced 1923 play Sea-Wife featuring a cast of 17 actors with all proceeds benefiting Chicago's Season of Concern, a not-for-profit that comes to the aid of Chicago area theatre professionals in times of need.

"A singular piece written in 1924, Sea- Wife has neither been published or professionally staged. 'A thing of strange and peculiar beauty,' is how Barry Clark described this poetic fantasy. The acknowledged source of Sea-Wife is British poet Matthew Arnold's poem The Forsaken Merman in which a sea king mourns for his human wife who has deserted him and has returned to live among her race. Anderson uses a remote island off the coast of Maine as the setting for his Romance."
- Alfred S. Shivers
