Mozes and The Firstborn
Playing a potent mix of sleazy grunge and power pop perfection Mozes and the Firstborn hail from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The band started out in 2010 with Melle Dielesen on vocals, guitar and songwriting, Corto Blommaert on bass and Raven Aartsen on drums. Ernst-Jan van Doorn joined later on guitar. In 2011 they released their first EP ‘I Got Skills’ which title track rather fast became the fan’s favorite. The band’s inspirations vary from Guided by Voices and Beck to Weezer and Nirvana.
The Californian label Burger Records released their self-titled debut album in 2014. Since then the band has embarked on international tours with The Growlers, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Together Pangea, crisscrossing the United States and Europe. In 2016 the band released Great Pile of Nothing, a more introvert and mellow album.
The past year Mozes and the Firstborn have been recording new tunes for their third full-length album, due for release in 2019. Embracing the feel of a mixtape, they blend their favorite styles and genres into an intriguing collection of songs. The band has worked with a number of producers, including producer/mixer Chris Coady (Beach House, Slowdive) and Roland Cosio (together PANGEA, Fuzz).
Madrid’s finest The Parrots have played across Europe, the US and Central America – packed nights at London’s Shacklewell Arms and chelada-fuelled lunchtime showcases at SXSW, raucous gigs of elemental garage noise, feelgood ferocity and many, many stage invasions (“everybody else gets very motivated when they see us play,” says frontman Diego).
After half a dozen singles and EPs and countless shows around the world, in 2016 they released their critically acclaimed first album Los Niños Sin Miedo (Heavenly Recordings)
While writing their second album, The Parrots took some days off and went down by the sea in Cádiz at the studios of much-loved Spanish sound engineer Paco Loco, to record ‘Girl’ and ‘My Love Is Real’, two new singles produced by The Horrors’ Tom Furse and mixed by Matt Wiggins (James Bay, LCD Soundsystem, Adele). They follow up their own unique take on Soy Peor by Bad Bunny, one of the biggest songs on the Latin/Spanish hip-hop scene of recent years (400 million plays on YouTube, 100 million on Spotify), which they released in February of 2018.
The Parrots have that genius-stupidity of all ace garage rock bands, and they mix sunbaked stoner elation with a gleeful mangling of the English language: “If sometimes I express myself in the wrong terms, because I’m not English, for me it doesn’t matter,” says Diego. “Let’s just get wild and do it theway we feel. When I first heard Jonathan Richman singing in Spanish, I loved it. He gets it all wrong and that has so much charm.” They also cite The Monks, The Groupies, 13th Floor Elevators, Buddy Holly and Elvis as inspiration, and Diego’s biggest musical love is Marc Bolan: “He has always been my main guy, he’s always there in my mind. I love the way some of his songs sound so naive but at the same time so mean and so tender. No one can say ‘baby’ quite like him.”
Billy Changer is the bassist of the very formidable Corners, as well as an Echo Park engineer and now the very solo artist behind a just-out self-titled LP on Lolipop that’s part experiment, part self-expression and part shot in the dark—or maybe it’s more a flare fired into the sky in hopes of help or at least shining light on things for a second. It’s lo-fi in a careful way and it’s a home recording that doesn’t sound like it ever had a home, and Changer played every part of it himself. The album art and that photo right there both transmit the mood in a moment: the human alone on the streets of the city they live in, looking back at you while you look back at them. Changer’s album is introspective and reflective in a way that perfectly serves the closeness of a recording like this—when it’s done playing, you might feel like someone just left the room. – Chris Ziegler (LA Record)
