In Tommy Genesis’ video for “100 Bad,” she’s spread upon a persian rug, rocking sharply shoulder-padded pinstripes and thigh-high patent boots, all the while feverishly shoveling bills into her crotch. To the majority, this is taken as “Tommy being Tommy” -- but the Canadian-born rapper do-it-all is quick to shoot down any notion that she’s assuming a permanent residency inside the “fetish-rap” bin she’s so often tossed into.
To Tommy, those shots are a nostalgic nod to Tracey Emin, one of many artists Genesis has sourced for inspiration over the course of her multifaceted career. Citing others like Richard Prince and Nobuyoshi Araki, the shades of her debut album come into focus. Nevertheless, she asserts that she still has some defining to do. Tommy’s follow up to her 2015 mixtape, World Vision, is thousands of takes in the making -- a practice in patience -- but she is anxious to present a project doused in duality.
Genesis admits she was “exposed to everything” with her young forays into the creative realm. From art school (where she majored in film and sculpture) to present day, Tommy operates throughout various creative outlets. Whether music, film, poetry, painting, contour nude drawing,
or curating art spaces, she comes from a diversely oriented world. Dictating her own practice comes natural. “I’m fully immersed in that culture,” Tommy says, adding, “I’m immune to any shock at this point.”
Tommy’s self-titled debut album will be released November 9, 2018.
