Bishop Gunn of Natchez, Mississippi, is rooted in the history and sounds of their home and the surrounding Delta, and features a blend of rock and roll, soul and blues. The group consists of vocalist Travis McCready, Drew Smithers on guitar, Ben Lewis on bass and Burne Sharp on drums.
Bishop Gunn released their debut full-length album Natchez in May 2018. They worked on the release with Grammy Award-winning producers Casey Wasner and Mark Neill at legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and FAME Studios, as well as The Purple House in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. The album, named after the band’s hometown, entered the Billboard charts as the #4 Blues Album and also appeared as #8 on their Heatseekers South Central chart. Rolling Stone featured the band among their “Artists You Need to Know,” asserting “anyone can cite the Muscle Shoals sound as an influence, but few acts can actually pull off making music worthy of such a claim. Nashville band Bishop Gunn is one of those acts…The resulting music is the perfect blend of Nashville and the Shoals, and is the rare album that builds upon its influences rather than resorting to outright mimicry.”
Earlier this year the band was featured at SXSW, played support dates for Blackberry Smoke and was invited for a return appearance on Kid Rock’s 9th Annual “Chillin’ the Most Cruise.” They spent the summer touring in support of the album, including performances at The Peach Fest, The Big House Museum, support dates for Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Outlaws and many others. They look forward to closing out 2018 by supporting The Marcus King Band on their Carolina Confessions tour and Whiskey Myers.
A singer-songwriter and guitarist from Alexandria, Virginia by way of Indianapolis, Mary-eL is injecting edgy rock and soul into the DMV music scene. This Jill-of-all-trades has hosted her own radio show, acted in short films, co-hosted local TV programs, is a highly sought-after studio session vocalist, and is well known for her energetic stage presence.
The last few years have been great for Mary-eL...in August 2015 she performed with John Kadlecik (Further, Dark Star Orchestra), Ron Holloway, and Beau Sasser (Kung Fu) at the Peach Festival. That same month she provided background vocals for Melvin Seals & the Jerry Garcia Band at the 2015 Lockn Fest. In October she sang with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), G.E. Smith (Saturday Night Live, Hall & Oates), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), and Billy Corgan(Smashing Pumpkins) at D.A.R Constitution Hall for a benefit concert to aid the wounded veterans of MusiCorps. Then in November she embarked on a 6-week, 28 city tour with The John Kadlecik Band as both a vocalist and guitarist. In July of 2016 she had the privilege of opening for the legendary Allman Brothers Band drummer, Butch Trucks & the Freight Train Band!
"A mesmerizing performer!" - M. Smith
As an original artist she has performed in many of the popular venues around the DMV including: Rams Head Live & Rams Head Onstage, DC9, Rock and Roll Hotel, the 8x10, Constitution Hall, State Theater, the Howard Theater, Baltimore Soundstage, Hard Rock Cafe DC, AMP by Strathmore, and even the French Embassy! A few of her songs have been played on various radio stations and programs including Ocean 98.1 FM, KNHR: No Hits Radio (Texas/Canada), The Kitty Opal Show (UK), and the No Filter Sports Radio show.
"The next one for sure!" - Chuck Treece (McRad, HR/Bad Brains)
When she’s not out performing her original music or providing vocals in the studio, you can see her from time to time performing with her fellow musical cohorts providing backup and support for their shows. No matter the venue or genre one thing's for certain: her passion for music comes through in her performance and it is both consuming and contagious!
