In an industry full of multi-hyphenate creatives, the best way to stand out is to be our authentic selves… whatever that means. Personal work is the perfect opportunity to explore what matters most to us, while letting potential clients and fans know exactly who we are. Join artist and author Adam J. Kurtz (aka ADAMJK) for a hilarious dissection of his accidental career and lessons learned along the way:

-Figuring out who the f*** you are, and what to do once you know
-Why we don’t need anyone’s permission to create exactly what we want
-How to grow a supportive audience online (?????)
-Insights and anecdotes on everything from ex-boyfriends to working with your teen pop idol

Adam J. Kurtz is an artist and author whose illustrative work is rooted in honesty, humor and a little darkness. His books have been translated into over a dozen languages and his “very personal” work for clients like Strand Bookstore and Urban Outfitters has been featured in the New Yorker, VICE, Adweek and more. Kurtz’s narrative voice is often a reaction to internet culture, exploring the evolving role of design and language in their modern context, where text and image “memes” rule conversation and have changed the nature of communication itself. It’s no surprise then that he’s amassed a considerable online audience of young—and young-at-heart—creatives.

From its beginnings as a craft and design club of 79 members, AIGA DC has grown to include over 1,100 (as of 08/13) individuals from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Its educational programs and discussion listserv provide forums for the sharing of ideas and resources, and its public service initiatives help make design accessible to everyone. From college students to firm principals to local service providers, everyone can find a place in the AIGA DC community to learn, grow and excel.

DC Design Week is led and produced by the local chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design. Every year, AIGA DC develops a week of fantastic programming—and every year, we strive to be more inclusive so that we can better reflect DC’s creative community as a whole. To accomplish this goal, we partner with organizations who share our values of community, connectivity, and diversity.
