Gentleman Brawlers + Joe Benjamin

Gentleman Brawlers

Gentleman Brawlers, a Brooklyn 6-Piece, are psychedelic Afro-soul revivalists known for their spooky, stylized tunes drenched in analog tape echo and spring reverb. Drawing influences from throwback electronica and acid rock into their funk-based compositions, the ‘Brawlers deliver a live show with plenty of heat, crackling energy, and butt-shaking whomp. While working on the tracks for their first full-length LP (due May 2018), the ‘Brawlers have honed their live show on college campuses and the festival circuit. Notable performances took place at Chicago’s Navy Pier, Daryl’s House, Princeton University’s storied Terrace F. Club, Bethlehem’s Musikfest, WNYC’s The Greene Space, Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory, and recently an in-studio appearance on WBEZ Chicago (home of NPR’s Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me and This American Life). Adventurous art-pop experimenters by trade, the band recently expanded their lineup and narrowed their focus to create a live music project dedicated to just one of the sonic ventures hinted at on previous recordings—the Lagos-by-way-of-Brooklyn Afrobeat sound of their single My Theory—and began performing in NYC jazz & world music clubs as the Gentleman Brawlers Afrobeat Project.

The band has drawn acclaim in the New York and London music press. They were brought to the attention of the Internet when Veteran BBC music writer Tom Robinson tipped them as a band showing great promise, calling the ‘Brawlers “a virtuoso live band, grooving together like a beautifully engineered machine.” Formed in 2011, the group consists of Becca Fox (vocals/keys), “Chatty Matty” Walsh (vocals/guitar), Jeremy Warren (drums), Trevor Brown (bass), Oskar Stenmark (trumpet), and Xavier Del Castillo (saxophone). Their first single “I Ain’t No Brian Wilson (I Was Made For These Times)” appeared on Occupy This Album, a musical tribute to the Occupy movement. The following year the band dropped an EP, We Were Made For These Times, on the band’s own Brooklyn Fields imprint. Since then, the band has been a stylish presence on the tour and festival circuit and will release their first full length LP in May 2018.

Joe Benjamin

Originally hailing from Germany, Joe Benjamin is a New York-based vocalist, composer and bandleader. He is currently at the helm of his genre-bending 7-piece band with which he has gained a devoted following in New York City, and toured throughout Europe to sold-out concert halls.

Joe's music is truly all-encompassing, combining an accessible, pop-rock songwriting style with the lush, complex harmonies of modern jazz and the intoxicating rhythmic feeling of funk. Perhaps the most outstanding qualities of Joe's music are his gift for storytelling and his riveting performance style that brings those stories to life. The lyrical content of his songs weave detailed accounts of all that his life in New York City has to offer from finding love to finding bed bugs, to his gripes about his "First World Problems" to his plaintive narratives of bittersweet nostalgia.

Since the band was founded in February 2013 they have headlined at many of the premier venues in New York City for both jazz and rock music including Brooklyn Bowl, BAM, Bowery Electric, Rockwood Music Hall and Drom, and have been featured performers at the Arts & Ideas Festival in New Haven and the Jazz Up July Festival in Stamford, as well as other events along the east coast of the U.S. In May 2015, the band embarked on a tour in Germany, selling out concerts throughout the country and gaining attention from both local and national press, including numerous TV and Radio appearances. Their first full-length debut album was released in January 2017 followed by a US tour in summer 2017.
