In a now long forgotten world, many generations ago, a bird like shape emerged from wooded dark- ness, floating and fluttering, drifting and dreaming. Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone.
Years spending wandering medieval landscapes have informed Claptone's view of the world, experi- encing both magical mystery and muted melancholy he enchanted onlookers with occult instruments and beguiling sounds. Forever surrounded by a sense of intrigue, the world soon cottoned on to the elusive yet enchanting musical powers of this otherworldly beast. The results are that today his sha- manistic sonic powers take him all around the world.
Whilst Claptone has continued to roam in his own circles, 2012AD proved to be a year dominatedby his infectious 'Cream' track. It became an immediate hit, topping new world charts at Beatport and RA, whilst the sonic conjuring of the 'Night On Fire' EP also lured all those who heard it, with the result another Top 20 hit. But that's not all, for the creativity flows freely in our hero, and his 'Another Night' also proved to be just as successful on the dancefloor. Deep and woozy, the Claptone sound pairs theatre with tragedy, feel good vibes with acute melancholia and imbues each groove with a Rhodes laced funk, an organic string hook and myriad earthy elements.
Up to the present day, Claptone releases have been birthed on Germany's influential Exploited label, picking up props from the likes of Pete Tong, DJ Sneak, Soul Clap, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose, A-Trak along the way. Who or whatever Claptone is, it is alive, with a life of its own, evolving and revolving in equal measure, exploring new sounds naturally and forever taking inspiration from long gone and occult worlds.
So far, esteemed and influential dancefloors at clubs in Berlin, London, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai, New York and many others around the world have fallen under the sonic spell of this secretive alche- mist. The future is unpredictable for Claptone, but a new release 'Wrong' including the track 'No Eyes' with the inimitable JAW from French funsters dOP is on the horizon. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours...
French DJ and producer.
Rodriguez Jr. reveals a different incarnation of Mateu’s musical psyche, one that strides ahead, guided only by his kaleidoscopic vision; moving through shimmering, contemplative electronica, to deep and urgent techno, left field melodic accents and quirky pop refrains, Rodriguez Jr. is the by-product of an untamed brand of creativity and a thirst for the new and unexpected. Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Stockhausen, LFO, Carl Craig, Eric Satie, Kraftwerk, and Michael Polnareff, Rodriguez Jr.’s spirit of adventure translates as soaring creativity, and music that cannot be pigeonholed.
For a solid 10 hours a day, Mateu manifests Rodriguez Jr. in his MLab Mk5 studio, which brims with vintage synthesizers, keyboards and dusty analog gear. Acclaimed Rodriguez Jr. releases for imprints such as Mothership, Boxer Records and Giant Wheels, prefaced the quirky melodies of his bass-driven house hit Princess Guacamole for mobilee records, and the tropical techno of Kids of Hula for it’s sister label Leena Music. Drawing both pleasure and inspiration from live performance, Rodriguez Jr. relishes the opportunity to realize his project on the stage, and has done extensively throughout Europe and America during some of his most acclaimed shows at Tomorrowland in Belgium, ADE in Amsterdam, Sonar Off in Barcelona, Showcase in Paris, Watergate in Berlin, Hardpop in Juarez and Kristal in Bucharest. Two heavy milestones were passed when his first-ever solo album titled „Bittersweet“ was released on Mobilee Records in 2012 followed by the 7th mobilee back to back compilation one year later.
His talents are not just limited to the dance floor. When fashion brands Hugo Boss and Gucci sought out a more fresh, urban and organic identity, they called in Mateu to produce their music for the project.
As he restlessly seeks out the ultimate intersection between all of his disparate influences, Mateu explains it best: “Good electronic music is not a jail,” he says, “It should be enjoyable everywhere, from dance floors to living rooms, and by everybody.” Now an integral part of the mobilee family, Mateu will continue to channel his vision, passion, and love of music into all that he does, and all that will come.
Passion is the artist's calling card, no matter the medium, and that's a truth Kevin Durante recognizes above all else. Perhaps his Italian roots push the producer/DJ to seek a higher beauty, but with more than a decade of creation, experimentation, and discovery behind him, his personal journey has taught him not to fear honesty. He's put all his cards on the table and thrown caution to the wind more than once for his work. He knows to embrace his perspective and bare himself openly and honestly in his music and his mixes, because audiences can tell real from fake, and he didn't come all this way to paint by numbers.
Durante learned to work with soul in his father's kitchen. A chef and restaurant owner in South Florida. Durante saw first-hand how experience, tradition, and a willingness to experiment can transform raw ingredients into sublime manifestations.
As a producer and DJ, he's drawn to the edge and intersections of house and techno. Raw rhythm and bass under tonal melodies resonates with his version of musical honesty. His style isn't built on contrived pop formulas or lyrics about eternal youth. Instead, he starts with time-honored four on the floor, elaborates with thumping bass, builds mood with melodic chords, and garnishes with tribal percussive textures. Equally inspired by the compositions of Duke Ellington, synth-heavy Italo-disco, and mid-2000s Cocoon records, Durante strives to create a body of work as versatile as his experiences.
It's a worldly sound, a fusion of his travels and global past. It's rich and romantic, like his early childhood spent in his birth country of Italy. It's tropical and vibrant, full of Latin color like his formative years in Florida. It's daring and adventurous, like when he moved to Los Angeles without ever having seen the Pacific coast, but it's also mature, refined through the past five years as he's learned from missteps and opportunities alike how to synthesize his influences and surroundings into something both personal and relatable, danceable but poignant, comfortably familiar but distinct from the pack.
The mysterious allure of musical vibrations can perplex and intrigue in equal amounts at the best of times, not least when the sorcery of a certain Damian Lazarus comes into play. Crosstown Rebels, Day Zero, Get Lost, Rebel Rave, his own DJ and production career, the discovery of a wealth of influential talents…all of these achievements and more make him not only one of the most respected exponents of the contemporary house and techno scene, but also one of its key tastemakers and pathfinders.
As a DJ, his mastery is unsurpassed. A true storyteller, Damian often holds court at those special times of the day when only his kind of DJ sets are required. Moments that demand a soundtrack that not only fits the mood, but elevates the atmosphere and takes the audi-ence to a whole other level of experience. Besides playing at the world’s best clubbing institutions (resident at DC10 in Ibiza for almost 10 years), Damian also specialises in performing beyond the confines of the walls of a club. He is an expert in performing his magic in extraordinary outdoor locations; jungles, beaches, the Robot Heart bus in the Nevada desert, Mayan ruins in Mexico and a whole host of other spellbinding sites around the world. Just one look at the superlative Day Zero event will tell you what Damian’s ethos is when it comes to outdoor exploits. Add to that Get Lost and Rebel Rave, two more events that epitomise his approach to hosting alfresco shows.
Damian’s visionary abilities are no more apparent than in the curation of music and his discovery of artists via the seminal label, Crosstown Rebels. During its 12-year lifespan, the label has been responsible for launching the careers of some of our scene’s best-known names; Jamie Jones, Art Department, Maceo Plex, Deniz Kurtel… His A&R skills are second-to-none, in direct correlation with the curation of his DJ sets. It’s his dedica-tion to seeking out unique talents that has helped to make his label one of the most influential outlets of recent times.
Crosstown’s sorcerer-in-chief has also applied these same bewildering powers to the de-velopment of his latest collaborative artist project, Damian Lazarus and The Ancient Moons. Lazarus has been joined at the production controls by James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Florence), with album recording sessions recently completed in Mexico. The project brings together a wide assortment of vocalists, collaborators and players from around the world. Taking inspiration from Lazarus’s Lazpod series, Get Lost events and Day Zero festival, this is music for deserts, jungles and sunrises.
In tandem with the album project, Damian has also conceived a live show, with band members Zulu (vocals), Ben Chetwood (Percussion and Drums) and Rob Gentry (Keys) who perform live alongside the chief wizard himself on Modular Synths and FX. Damian Lazarus And The Ancient Moons hit the road in the Summer 2015, bringing a whole new dimension to festival stages and intriguing outdoor locations such as Glastonbury, Wilderness, III Points Miami, Crssd Festival and many others.
Throughout a career spanning many years Damian Lazarus has worked tirelessly to main-tain a constant flow of creativity and innovation within the house and techno sphere. Never losing focus, he continues on his mystical pathway to greatness, unleashing his positive spirit on the masses at every opportunity.
Open your mind, embrace the magic, and get ready for the next spellbinding chapter…
