Catch Me Catatonic
Catch me Catatonic is a jazz/blues/punk/rock/alternative genre blending band; it started around a glass table. Some of us had been friends for years, and some of us had only just met, but we were immediately connected by our passion for music. We come from different places and pull our musical inspirations from even more places, but we contribute equally to the creation of every song we play and it’s been magic from day one.
Our members: Adrielle (lead guitar/vocals/lyrics); Isobel (lead vocals/lyrics/piano); Jack (drums/piano/lyrics); and Kelson (bass/vocals/guitar/lyrics) strive to make music that we love: music we can dance to, scream to, cry to, and bleed on the mic to. Our sound pulls from jazz, blues, punk, cabaret, classic rock, folk, metal, and alternative rock. Some of our major influences include Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Amanda Palmer, Amy Winehouse, Monk, Lacuna Coil, Joan Jett, Tool, Blue October, Nine Inch Nails, The Doors, Being as an Ocean … (so it goes)
The name of the band was inspired by the specific kind of catatonia certain people experience during endured periods of depression. It is a stupor associated with schizophrenia. But really it’s a human condition, and I’ve always had a tendency for it. It’s when the sweet, deep darkness of an exquisite pain grips you still, and you cast away to the farthest reaches of your mind where the darkness completely consumes you. It’s the place you sit inside yourself and float away on river Oblivion. Externally, catatonia looks like the lights are on but no one is home. A catatonic person will experience muscle rigidity and incoherence. They are of or in an unresponsive stupor. I used to live here. On island catatonia. I visit there sometimes still. But I’ve learned that all of the beautiful souls are touched with darkness. It is what unifies us. It’s what brought my band together. It transforms because it throws everything lighter than it into sharper perspective.
The pain the anguish the trauma the betrayals the lies the heartbreaks the guilt the shame the beatings the rapes the toxic lovers the broken bones and broken souls the abuse the torture the loneliness the fear the rage the gun shots and slit wrists — all of the darkness inside every one of us is all of ours and it only wins when you pretend it isn’t there and allow it to control you. So embrace the darkness, cover yourself in its beauty, and turn it into something meaningful.
Hookfish is a 4-piece rock band out of Denver, CO that plays a mix of styles that includes rock, alt-rock, reggae, Americana, and blues that they’ve dubbed “mountain rock” or sometimes “alt-everything”. They set themselves apart with well-crafted songs, great vocal harmonies, clever and memorable lyrics, and hooks galore! Dan, Joel, Eric, & Mark bring a wide array of musical experiences ranging from a Brazilian drum battery to soulful R&B to Punk to Reggae and everything in between... they’re as eclectic as a junk drawer! So what do they sound like? What can you expect at a Hookfish show? Good music that is both new and familiar at the same time. Expect a mix of original tunes and covers that make any time a good time. Grab a beverage, shake your butt and get ready to sing along!
Sweet Ball Peen
Genghis: Greg ‘Genghis’ Young covers vocals, lead and rhythm guitars for SBP. His early playing days were influenced by the blues and quickly moved from there to hard rock. Moving forward from Clapton and Iron Maiden, and finding Megadeth and Al Dimeola the driving forces in his style were set. In the early 90s, Genghis was the singular guitarist for the SF Bay Area rock outfit, Pistol Apostle, with whom he enjoyed modest success, and recorded many well-received demos. The pinnacle moment of that chapter was perhaps opening for 24-7 Spyz on Halloween night in 1991 while Kirk Hammett of Metallica looked on and then offered his compliments after the show. Genghis joined SBP in 2003 and has been a part of that original line-up ever since.
Stetz: Keith ‘Stetz’ Stoetzer provides the ‘glue’ that holds the music together. Serving up the rhythm guitars for SBP, the occasional lead and some cameo lead vocals, Stetz grinds out the rocking from the get go and never lets up. Broken arms, legs, and bloodied hands are no match for this unstoppable force. Keith is the other seminal member in today’s line up, drawing his style from wide ranging influences…if you had to pick three, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Clutch, and The Grateful Dead would be safe bets. Keith knows no enemies for a reason; find him after the next show and strike up a conversation and you’ll see!
Zack: Zack's musical journey covers hip-hip, reggae, gospel, and funk, blues, rock, and metal; playing everywhere from coffee shops, parties, and dive bars, to ballrooms, the People’s Fair of Denver and the Emergenza Battle of the Bands Regional Finals. In 2007, Zack joined the powerhouse rockers of Denver’s own “Sweet Ball Peen,” with whom he recorded the studio album, “Cover Up.” Every night he is a lock to throw down epic, stage-rumbling performances you must not miss and will never forget!
Kevin: Kevin Jochem, the best not-rich-and-famous drummer in Denver, punished the kit for SBP from 2006 to 2010 and returned in 2013 to complete the triumphant comeback of SBP!!! His contribution to the 2009 CD, Cover Up, recorded by Jamie ‘Hell-yeah’ Hillyer at Module Overload Studios is a little of the abundant proof that, yes, that boy can play! Kevin's credits are too many to name in this space; he plays it all, and better than you! Lucky are the ones who have smelted his Jochemy!
Chainsaw Rodeo formed in the summer of 1992. They quickly built a loyal following along the Colorado Front Range with their reputation for high energy & loud live shows. Earning the respect of their peers & a growing fanbase, Chainsaw performed their original brand of catchy hard rock songs nightly. The party rolled for over three years. Then proving the age old wisdom that "It's better to burn out than fade away," the group went it's separate ways at the peak of their game. The members of Chainsaw continued to perform and record with different acts around the country. Flash forward to 2015 and the original members; Rob, John, and Martin found themselves in the Denver area again & decided to reunite. Enter Donnie Crisp on bass. The guys knew Donnie from sharing the stage many times when he was the lead singer & guitarist in the metal powerhouse, Assassin. Donnie has kept busy as a fixture in the Denver rock scene with several successful bands. It was important that any new member be from the extended Chainsaw family, and Donnie fit the bill. An excellent bassist, guitarist, vocalist, & songwriter he has made the band that much better. Now after spending the past year polishing the Chainsaw classics & writing new material, Chainsaw is set to hit the Colorado scene once again. All the songs start with a catchy melody; add John's thundering drums, Donnie's groove, Rob's nasty guitar crunch, and vocals delivered with grit & passion, Chainsaw Rodeo will prove to be a band that you will not want to miss!
