Nina Shallman

Nina Shallman is a singer-songwriter, musician and poet. A native of Southern California, Nina headed east in September 2014 to begin freshman year at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Just one month later, she was selected as one of only two students to represent the school at the 2015 Five College PoetryFest, an annual event celebrating undergraduate poets from Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and UMass Amherst.

In addition to courses in philosophy, poetry, French, and European history, Nina’s new collegiate experience includes performing with The Amherst College Bluestockings, the school’s acclaimed all-female a cappella group, and as the lead singer with an on-campus jazz combo.

Nina—along with her sister and two brothers—grew up in the Los Angeles area in a multicultural household. She has always been drawn to lyrics and melody, and remembers harmonizing to Beatles music that her parents often had on in the car when she was a little girl. That music remained an influence, as did songs by a range of artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Nilsson, Norah Jones, and Joni Mitchell.

Nina started playing piano when she was six, and writing poetry at eleven. When she took up guitar at thirteen, she put words and music together and found her passion for writing songs. “I think that a lot of my songs have started out as poetry, and poetry has influenced my songs,” says Nina. “There is an inherent musicality to poetry that appeals to me, I see it as music put into words.”

That quality shines through in her most recent songs, which she has been recording with award-winning producer Andrew Williams (member of The Williams Brothers, and producer for artists including Peter Case, Victoria Williams, and Five for Fighting) since 2013. They include the single and video “Daisies,” released in December 2014. Her vocals and compositions are both contemporary and timeless—deeply felt and soulfully expressed.

Balancing artistic growth and academic life, and west coast roots with New England seasons, Nina continues to write songs and will record new material with Williams whenever she’s in California. More than anything, Nina wants to share her music, and she looks forward to performing live concerts.
