“Inspired by the fearless truth-telling of Nina Simone, and projecting the ethereal aura of
early Erykah Badu,” according to billboard.com; Jah9 has become a femiNINE icon of
a movement based on universal consciousness. Deeply mystical, Jah9 has emerged
from a chrysalis of poetry and dub of Jamaican roots reggae. Her philosophy–
profoundly spiritual, and her style – “Jazz on Dub”.
Born Janine Cunningham, Jah9 spent her first 9 years in Falmouth, Trelawny, on
the rural western edge of Jamaica before moving into the city of Kingston, where
she ventured inward and found an outlet for her feelings in the words that she
wrote… Jah9 became a staple on Jamaica’s underground poetry scene by 2009.
The empty spaces of instrumental dub allowed a young Jah9 to find her voice, and
her demos caught the attention of the legendary singer Beres Hammond as well
as popular producer Don Corleon; meanwhile the passion in her live performance
and her love for live music caught the attention of her peers and assisted in jump
starting what is known to the world as the ‘reggae revival’
Jah9 has gone on to successfully release two albums; ‘New Name’ (2013) &
‘9’ (2016). Her debut album, ’New Name’ produced by pioneer selector Rory
‘Stone Love’, was voted album of the year by AchisReggae.com and brought forth
the playful hit, ‘Avocado’. In that same year Jah9 released the single “Steamers A
Bubble” which has become an anthem for herb users worldwide. ‘9’ album
represents Jah9’s shifts in energies to unveil a deeper more personal development of
her ‘Jazz on Dub’ sound. The album was voted #2 Reggae Album of the Year by
Described as "black magic," Jah9 and her dub inspired band, The Dub Treatment, is a
staple on European and American reggae and world music festivals having performed
at Boomtown (UK), Roskilde Fest (DE), Paleo Fest (CH), Rototom (ES), Caliroots (US)
among many others. A certified yoga instructor trained in Kemetic, Ashtanga and
Iyengar methods, Jah9 has been known to compel her audiences during her live set to
pause, breathe deeply and feel empowered. Intimately engaging with her fan base,
Jah9 also curates an organic music-based yoga experience she calls ‘Yoga on Dub’.
Jah9 is rooted in her African heritage and driven to serve. In 2015, while on tour in Italy
and Malta she was intent on engaging with African refugees, sharing with them insight
on the new environment they would face, natural wellness as well as yoga/breathing as
Jah9 is currently working in studio with legendary producer Clive Hunt on her follow-up
to 2016’s ‘9’ album. So far two singles have been released; “Love Has Found I” and “
Feel Good”. They will be both be featured on an exclusive vinyl EP dubbed “Feelings”
to be released in the summer of 2018.
The story of Indubious is not for the faint of heart. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Indubious was forged in the fires of pain and destruction. Evton and Skip, brothers and bandmates born with Cystic Fibrosis and convinced by doctors of their impending death from an early age, have emerged as a powerful force for change and the future of conscious music. Their only choice has always been mind over matter, and time has proven that their unbending positive outlook, combined with an inspiring message of love and hope, has not only helped them overcome personal hardship, but catapulted their music onto the world stage with an unstoppable momentum.
Currently based in Oregon, Indubious has released four albums over the past few years, including Wake The Lion which was produced by EDM/Dub/Reggae pioneer Gaudi. Their new album From Zero, which dropped on 7-1-17, debuted at #6 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #8 on iTunes Reggae Chart, features legendary guest artists including Dancehall icon Sizzla, Vaughn Benjamin (formally of Midnite and Akae Beka), and Reggae/R&B singer Zahira Soul. From Zero is a mix of conscious Dancehall and Roots Reggae with top level production. All songs were written, produced, and engineered by Indubious, and released on their own label Righteous Sound Productions.
“Simply put, Indubious is my favorite band of 2017, and From Zero is my favorite album of 2017 - and it truly
deserves to be yours too.” review by Russel A. Trunk via annecarlini.com
“For me, that’s one of the most original, refreshing pieces of reggae music i’ve heard in a long time. I think it’s really special.” David Rodigan on BBC in regards to the song See Sharp off of From Zero
Armed with impressive instrumental skill, powerful harmonies, and an electrifying stage presence, Indubious is destined to change the face of music. They have developed a steadily rising reputation as ambassadors of the West Coast Reggae movement. Leaving audiences stunned and amazed whilst shattering any preconceived notions of genre and style, they recruit fans from all walks of life, affectionately called "Indubians."
Indubious has performed worldwide on international tours and at many prestigious festivals including Wakarusa, Gathering Of The Vibes, Reggae On The River, Sulafest in India, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, California Roots Festival, Beloved, Britt Festivals, The Oregon Country Faire, Reggae In The Hills, Northwest World Reggae Festival, Earthdance, Gaia Festival, plus club and concert hall tours from Seattle to San Diego. They have shared the stage and toured with many influential names such as Black Uhuru, Matisyahu, Blondie, Michael Franti, Stephen Marley, Rebelution, Junior Reid, and Pato Banton, to name a few.
The widely acclaimed Indubious album Wake The Lion received featured placement on Beatport, iTunes, Amazon, and numerous media outlets. Indubious' unique sound was brought vibrantly to the surface by the legendary composer/producer Gaudi, showcasing Wake The Lion as a textural journey into the world of Rootstronica. Lush synths, deep bass, and visionary lyricism encompass the entire record, blurring the lines between roots, dub, dancehall, and heavy dance psychedelia. Vibrationally rich and musically brilliant, the album champions a revolutionary sound and pushes the boundaries of reggae music.
The band and their legion of fans have adopted the motto “Live Indubiously,” which means living life without doubt or fear, and with faith in the fact that we are all here for a reason. “Our gift is music,” says Indubious, “and our mission is to reconnect the people of the world with rightful living. We wish to speak the truth in an effort to inspire others to do the same, to raise the positive vibrations of our planet, and to help others express the true loving nature within us all.”
