If hip-hop is a menu, def.sound would be the vegan option. With the genre’s saturation of hardcore rappers and trap producers, def (shortened from Definitive Sound and spelled all lowercase in honor of bell hooks) wants to be your healthy alternative, feeding both the mind and spirit. Born watered and raised in South Central Los Angeles, def.sound is a producer, published poet, a community-building entrepreneur, and a contemporary hip-hop artist. He was called one of the best new artists to watch by LA Weekly and earned a spot in BBC Radio’s year-end list with his single “(A)Gain.” New music comes out later this year, so it’s about time everyone started paying attention.
LA native Cassandra Violet's transcendent indie pop blends infectious hooks, loops and layered vocals into a candy-colored girl-group confection, a la Lily Allen meets the Supremes. Already a SoCal favorite, her unique sounds have been featured at School Night at Bardot, the Moroccan Lounge, the Echo, the Bootleg, Resident, and the Regent Theater, with press in LA Weekly, Buzzbands LA and Glide. Her songs have been placed on Ozark (Netflix), The Mindy Project (Hulu), The Fosters (ABC Family), and films including Girl on the Edge, featured on Showtime. Cassandra writes songs from a modern woman’s perspective about strength, solitude, love and disappointment, sung in sassy three part harmony. Her second EP, Body&Mind, was released in 2016 and was featured on Buzzbands.LA, Hello Giggles, Philthy Mag, and Audiofemme. She released a new EP in December 2017, and in April 2018 she toured Asia with the Japanese rock musician Miyavi.
While members Annabelle Maginnis and Kofi Asare-Aboagye met in college, MetronOhm was not fully formed until March of 2017 when Hunter Craig officially joined the crew. It was a perfect fit. Kofi and Annabelle both operate with intuitive music knowledge while Hunter brought much needed technical skill, performance experience and critical input to the table.
They can be caught in some of the major venues around Los Angeles, also traveling to San Francisco every few months. They visited Austin, Texas to perform at SXSW in 2017 and made a presence in the local summer festival circuit playing the KCRW event, Chinatown Summer Nights, Broke LA, and Echo Park Rising. MetronOhm premiered the single, "Wabi Sabi,” with Teddy Roxpin through Buzzbands.LA in 2018. Their debut EP, Matter, was released in April 2017. All content is available on all major streaming services and for a name-your-price donation on Bandcamp. Stay tuned for more releases to come.
