Lee Fields & The Expressions

"I feel that every human being's purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do," says Lee Fields. "And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records."

Apologies to the late, great James Brown, but you'd be hard pressed to find another singer who's ever worked as hard as Fields, a man who's been making soul and funk anthems since 1969.

Since that time, Fields has toured the world with musical legends like Kool and the Gang, Sammy Gordon and the Hip-Huggers, O.V Wright, Darrell Banks, and Little Royal. Recorded with French house DJ/producer Martin Solveig. And somehow found a newer, younger audience and become more prolific as the years transpire.

"In a curious case of musical evolution, the older Fields becomes, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul that he grew up with as a young man," noted NPR music writer Oliver Wang (and that was back in 2009).. Now Fields returns with his most triumphant and honest record yet, Special Night, recorded with The Expressions and released on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records.

Special Night follows the the critical success of his Truth & Soul recordings My World, Faithful Man and 2014's Emma Jean -- the last one American Songwriter hailing as "more than just a stroll down memory lane ... it's the sound of a man who understands his musical strengths and plays to them with class, authority and soul searching intensity."

You'll hear Fields flexing those strengths on Special Night. There's some JB-style funk on there. And hints of Stax, Chess, Fame and Motown.

But this is not a throwback. Possessing a voice that's equally raucous and tender, Fields crafts a truly honest, soulful work. "This is a record about what people do in real life," says the singer. For one example, he cites the yearning "Work to Do," which entails a "a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing."

Adds Fields: "When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I'm talking to my lady -- literally, expressing the way I feel. You can tell if a song is real or not. And every moment I'm recording, those moments are real."

Meanwhile, album standout "Make This World" works both as militaristic funk and a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. "The world was designed to last indefinitely," says Fields.

"And we're the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I'm hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through."

Fields and his six-piece band will tour in the fall, where he notes the audiences seem tgrowing and changing. "I'm seeing a younger crowd," he notes. "And that's a blessing."

As for his late success? Fields regrets nothing. "I was already talking to myself in the beginning of my career about the end of my career," he says. "I was a little naive, so I told myself, 'Think about the future in every song you make. Make things you can live with. Everything you do has consequences.' And today, I live like I've always lived."

A credo that continues with Special Night. "All the songs on that record have special meaning," he says. "I hope people take a good listen to it and find the magic."

Raised amid the rich musical culture and history of the San Francisco Bay Area, Monophonics proudly carry the torch through the generations into today’s musical landscape. Holding on to tradition, but by no means purists of any kind, they play their own brand of music known as “Psychedelic Soul.”


The 2012 release of Monophonics last album In Your Brain saw the band pulling influences from such acts as early Funkadelic, Sly and The Family Stone and the The Temptation's Norman Whitfield produced records. With the new album, Sound of Sinning (out now on Transistor Sound Records), the band has grown in all areas of record making and felt a need to explore other important influences. While the group has come to cherish these inspirations, with Sound of Sinning they started venturing beyond, to the groups that were inspiring those soul acts to embrace the psychedelic sound of the 60's and 70's. Bands such as The Zombies, The Beatles, Beach Boys and Pink Floyd. Even with the experimentation of new musical territory, they display the sound that people know and love about Monophonics. Touching on Northern soul, doo-wop, rock and roll, Psych pop, and cinematic music, Monophonics show off their diversity while remaining true to their roots. Overall it's heartfelt music and old school vibes, without losing sight of the present. This is music steeped in that timeless feeling when people could write and produce songs that you could listen to over and over again. Sound of Sinning was produced by Kelly Finnigan & Ian McDonald and recorded on an old Tascam eight-track 1/4” tape machine at Transistor Sound Studios in San Rafael, CA.


Monophonics is Austin Bohlman (Drums), Myles O’Mahony (Bass/Background Vocals), Ian McDonald (Guitar/Background Vocals), Ryan Scott (Trumpet/Back- ground Vocals/Percussion) & Kelly Finnigan (Keys/Lead Vocals) along with a rotating 2nd horn usually filled by Nadav Nirenberg (Trombone) from Ikebe Shakedown and Breakdown Brass.

American funk music project founded in 1997 in Los Angeles.

The JUNGLE FIRE sound digs deep into afro/latin funk with an approach that is both authentic and highly explosive! Comprised of musicians from the Los Angeles region, JUNGLE FIRE pulls it’s influences from such legends as Ray Camacho, Enrique Lynch, Ray Barretto, James Brown, Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango (just to name a few) to create a melting pot of afro-cuban rhythms, break-beats and 70′s inspired funk.


Originally conceived as a one-off project back in 2011, JF quickly gained attention and thus proved its place among the thriving LA funk/soul scene by lighting up local clubs, venues and underground warehouse parties.


The buzz grew and word of mouth spread eventually linking up the band with the Ohio-based indie soul label Colemine Records to cut their first 7” single “Comencemos” (a cover of Fela’s “Let’s Start”). Lauded by DJ’s, radio stations, tastemakers and rabid funk fans across the globe “Comencemos” sold out internationally paving the way for the second 7” Colemine release “Firewalker”. A full length LP is currently in the works.

Serving up a healthy dose of originals and deep latin/afro funk covers all cooked up together in a live mixtape style set ensuring an energy that is nothing short of fire.


Although the members of JF all have diverse musical backgrounds the band as a whole is a direct reflection of the culture and musical landscape of Los Angeles, which has been the biggest influence behind the sound and flavor that is uniquely Jungle Fire.


Since their inception Jungle Fire has played an impressive amount of club dates and festivals both domestic and abroad having shared the stage with Shuggi Otis, The Blackbyrds, Lee Fields, Charles Wright, The Budos Band and even performing for Los Angeles’ recent mayoral inauguration. During the winter of 2013 Jungle Fire embarked on a massively successful U.K. tour playing to packed venues at every stop including headlining Craig Charles’ Funk Club (Band On The Wall) and BBC 6 Radio.


Individually and collectively, JF’s musicians have recorded, toured or played with Stevie Wonder, Breakestra, Ozomatli, Ethio Cali, Quantic, Alice Russell, De La Soul, Emily Wells, La Santa Cecilia, Simple Citizens, Del The Funky Homosapien, Celia Cruz, Orgone, Myron & E, The Greyboy Allstars, The Lions and Big Daddy Kane.

Boogaloo Assassins

The Boogaloo Assassins’ mission is simple: bring la gente a funky good time, Latin-soul style. Formed in Los Angeles in 2007, the Boogaloo Assassins are the West Coast’s modern answer to New York City’s Latin music explosion of the late 1960s. Heavily indebted to the classic sounds of Spanish Harlem, Los Asesinos serve up their own late 1960’s style salsa and “Latin Boogaloo”, best described as a raucous fusion of American R&B with Cuban rhythms, sung in both English and Spanish. Perfect dance music for a Friday night, the Assassins are known throughout Los Angeles/OC for their packed, high-energy live shows.

Boogaloo Assassins long-awaited debut CD “Old Love Dies Hard” is 7 cuts of old-meets-new salsa, boogaloo, and Latin-soul. Taking inspiration from groundbreaking artists of NYC’s latin music explosion of the 1960′s, “Old Love Dies Hard” reinterprets and creates classic Latin dance music perfect for today’s dancefloor. Singles such as “Mi Jeva” (featured in feature film Celeste and Jesse Forever) “No No No” (a classic reimagining of the blues/reggae classic) and straight-latin-Boogaloo-meets-the-Beach-Boys romp “Do You Wanna Dance” are 3 of the disc’s highlights. The White Blinds

Emerging from the tight-knit Los Angeles Funk/Soul community, The White Blinds are one of the newest collectives to carry the torch of instrumental music in the city of angles.The White Blinds sounds pay homage to the classic soul jazz organ trio's of the 60's and 70's with a splash of New Orleans groove and Afro-Funk overtones. This trio, led by drummer and percussionist Michael Duffy with Organist Carey Frank and Guitarist Matt Hornbeck, have come together to form a tight and soulful ensemble, filtered though the lens that is uniquely Los Angeles.
