DOWNTOWN ‘81 (In Memory of Glenn O’Brien), with Kenneth Goldsmith

Former WFMU radio rogue Kenneth Goldsmith ("Kenny G"), founder of Ubuweb, reads excerpts from his book, "New York: Capital of the 20th Century" (Verso, 2015), a rewriting of Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project adapted for New York City. Accompanied by an evocative slideshow of vintage art and iconic photographs, plus a music soundtrack, Goldsmith revisits the downtown New York scene of the late '70s and early '80s—the era of CBGB, Rammellzee, Patti Smith, and Basquiat. Goldsmith reads from the eyewitness chronicles of Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, Anthony Haden-Guest, Cookie Mueller, Glenn O’Brien, Andy Warhol, Tama Janowitz, Bret Easton Ellis, and others. Adult content, discretion advised for young minds.
