Allegra Levy

Most jazz vocalists sing standards. Allegra Levy writes her own. From the plaintive title track of her boldly autobiographical debut album, LONELY CITY, to the haunting strains of her new CD, CITIES BETWEEN US, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter has penned a lyrical collection of harmonically adventurous-yet-familiar originals steeped in the tradition of the Great American Songbook.

Levy, a native of Connecticut now based in New York, has been dubbed a "double-barreled talent" by JazzTimes and was one of this month’s featured players in Downbeat Magazine. She also recently completed a seven-month artist residency at the Hong Kong Four Seasons Hotel. Educated at New England Conservatory in Boston, she’s known for her richly sweet yet swinging alto voice, as well as for writing catchy, emotive songs grounded in tradition with a nod to the progressive.

"Fresh... exotic... and far beyond the ordinary," said The New York Times of her first CD, from SteepleChase Lookout. Her new album, released in April 2017 on SteepleChase Records, features Jay Anderson on bass, Carmen Staaf on piano, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Stephen Riley on tenor sax, and Billy Drummond on drums. It also manages to hit every note, from high to low, on the in's and outs of love.
