Canadian singer-songwriter Mickey Acorn wouldn’t sound too out of place on that classic rock station in your town with the playlist that proudly hasn’t been updated since the 70’s. You know, the one you listen to on the way home from work, or back from the bar when you probably shouldn’t be behind the wheel but it’ll be OK, you think. His songs are as natural and familiar as those old hits on first listen, but Acorn’s love of Americana and indie rock gives him the tools to skilfully twist that comfortable palate, using it to draw pictures of challenging pasts and confusing presents, yet always with a hard-earned sense hope for the future.
Guided by Voices, Acorn rode out to Japan on a Crazy Horse and crashed for a few nights at the old Yankee Foxtrot Hotel, trying to piece together what just happened the last 30 years. That sense of continent-sized disconnect is evident in his songs, like the unreachable heroine of “Parachute Girl,” or the complex relationship rituals of “Twin Peaks,” two highlights of his self-released ep.
