The Dead South
A Canadian folk-bluegrass musical ensemble from Regina, Saskatchewan. They sing about murderous, estranged spouses and runaway lover cousins in a boot-stomping acoustic configuration that includes banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar, some whistles, hoots and hollerin’, and finger snappin’. The idea for a rockin’ stompin’ bluegrass band came to Nate and Danny 2012; they had played together before back in high school in a short-lived alternative grunge band. Nate had been listening to Trampled By Turtles, Old Crow Medicine Show, and older bluegrass acts and the two wanted to put their own spin on tradition. This also marked Nate’s very first go at singing. They wrote some originals and tested them out at open mics. Shortly after, Colton, who was into metal, and Scott, more in the singer-songwriter vein, added more bodies to The Dead South. Colton learned banjo and Scott switched from guitar to mandolin. The result was their own unique take on the Bluegrass genre, as none of them actually had any clue what they were doing. But they knew they wanted it to be fun, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, with serious musicianship.
A diverse group of masterfully talented musicians who stand out like a sore thumb from the traditional bluegrass world, Whiskey Shivers have made a name for themselves with a genre-pushing sound that the Washington Post called "apocalyptic Americana" and NPR described as "frenetic bluegrass" with a "punk spirit.
Del Suelo is the pseudonym of Erik Mehlsen, who has spent the better part of the last decade touring as a member of the internationally successful The Dead South, winning a Juno Award in 2018, and performing with and writing songs for The Andino Suns, winning a WCMA in 2017.
Fans have been waiting patiently for a follow up to Del Suelo’s breakthrough 2016 release — a 10 chapter/10 song combination project titled I Am Free — an innovative art project forcing the collision of the worlds of the music and literature.
Since the release of I Am Free in 2016, Del Suelo has taken philosophical alt-pop sounds across Western Canada and Northern Europe (Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark and Austria). His virtuoso guitar playing, soaring vocals, and storytelling abilities have earned a him a reputation as a must-see live act. From festival to intimate cafe, he has shared the stage with acts such as Sloan, Corb Lund, and Chixdiggit.
Buzz is heating up regarding Del Suelo’s forthcoming release The Musician’s Compass: A 12 Step Programme, a wildly playful yet deeply sobering project about the highs and lows of living life on the road. The novel and LP will be released in September of 2018.
The Gawd Almighties
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to attend an old fashioned tent revival with the likes of Woody Guthrie, John Prine, Pokey LaFarge, Todd Snider, and perhaps Ray Charles showing up at alter call to assist you in reckoning your demons than look no further than The Gawd Almighties.
They hail from Dallas and a little south of heaven all the way to East Texas and consist of award winning singer/songwriter Rags O'Hooligan III with his preacher like deliveries and punk sensibilities. Drummer Marcia Keys keeps everyone in line while adding soulful back ups with songbird and keyboardist Regina Debilio who has the voice of an angel. Rantz Gibson leads with a prayer of blues slide and heartbreaking flourishes. And Jacob Doe keeps it real and low for the congregarion as he commands his upright bass. So pack up your sins and strife and head over to the next spirit filled gathering near you.
