The Big Takeover

Since 2007, the New York six-piece The Big Takeover has been fulfilling the mission implied in their name: packing clubs in the city and upstate and building their brand and reputation on the road and in the studio. A far cry from the pop-punk of American ska, The Big Takeover take their cues from Desmond Dekker and the first wave of Jamaican pop music as well as from the soulful energy and sophistication of Motown. At the center of this tight, grooving ensemble is the live-wire singing and deceptively subtle songwriting of the Jamaican-born NeeNee Rushie, a powerhouse performer who makes the audience feel like accomplices more than spectators. Traditional and experimental, The Big Takeover’s global blend reveals deep fluency in reggae and world music, hints of soul, and a pop classicism that is their own thing entirely. In New York’s musically hopping Mid-Hudson Valley, they are only the band around that is welcomed and honored at all the major national-circuit rooms: the indie/experimental haven of BSP in Kingston, the jazz and blues gem that is the Falcon in Marlboro, the classic rock mecca of the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. The Big Takeover packs them all. On the road, the band has played nearly 700 shows, sharing stages with The Original Wailers, Jefferson Starship, Eek-a- Mouse, English Beat, the Slackers and more. The band was selected to participate in a Converse Rubber Tracks recording session in Brooklyn NY, and toured around the US on their 4th studio record “Silly Girl”, in August of 2017. In October 2017, ‘Silly Girl’ was placed on Relix/ charts, at #10. They are currently working on an upcoming release in the studio.

Jackie Mendez

Jackie Mendez is a vocalist & musician based in Los Angeles, California. She grew up listening to a wide range of music, but it wasn’t until her introduction to Ska and Punk, mainly the British 2Tone ska revival music of the late 1970’s where Jackie took the next step and started playing in bands. She developed a keen interest in 1960's era Jamaican Ska and Reggae influenced by singers from the likes of Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe.

When Angel City Records approached Jackie, the focus was to showcase her as a solo artist while supplying her with backing by the label's reggae/ska house recording band "thee Hurricanes" which features an all-star line-up of some of California’s finest musicians. Her 1st release "Introducing Jackie Mendez" EP has been making waves worldwide as she continues to perform in the west coast of California and Mexico. Jackie has been touring independently and with top international acts, Mon Laferte and Natalia Lafourcade. Jackie Has just released a new single "Forever True" with a full length album in the works to be released Summer 2018.

Xiantoni Ari

Xiantoni Ari is a singer, actress, dancer and musician born and raised in Southern California. Growing up within Los Angeles’s vibrant entertainment scene along with the influence of her mother, 60’s and 70’s Northern Soul icon Gwen Owens, Xiantoni developed a deep interest in music from the get go. She is well versed in different genres but for the label utilizes her talent in the realm of vintage Soul and R&B. Backed by the label’s house band, the Angel City All-stars, her powerful voice echoes the timeless sounds of the classic Soul era. Xiantoni brings her powerful voice, charm, and high energy to each of her live performances leaving the audience blown away. Xiantoni just wrapped up a month long tour across Europe alongside her label mates Thee Hurricanes and Jackie Mendez for the 2nd Angel City Records Revue. She is preparing to begin touring the west coast in the coming months and in the studio for new tracks. Stay posted for tour dates and new full length album due out Summer 2018.
