NPR Tiny Desk Contest On The Road feat. Naia Izumi

NPR Tiny Desk On The Road

Join The Current, NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company for a celebration of the Tiny Desk Contest community in the Twin Cities! This event will feature a live performance by 2018 Tiny Desk Contest winner Naia Izumi, as well as some of our favorite local artists who entered the Contest this year:
● iLLism
● The Nunnery

Thousands of unsigned bands and artists entered NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2018, our search to find a great undiscovered talent to perform at the most famous desk in music. Our judges picked one winner, but in the process, we found many new musicians to fall in love with, and countless reasons to celebrate all the creativity tucked away in communities across the country.

Now, NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company, the sponsor of the Tiny Desk Contest since its launch in 2014, are teaming up with our friends at The Current to bring Naia Izumi and the Tiny Desk Contest tour to the Twin Cities.

What happens when two great things come together? It creates something so much more ill than the sum of its parts. Hailing from the upper Midwest, from a city well known for its live music and creative culture, Minneapolis' own Envy and Fancy, together known as iLLism, are a dynamic male and female Hip Hop and R&B group.

iLLism members, Envy and Fancy are not new to the music scene, both having excelled in their own respective solo careers. Envy became popular with his 2008 hit "Ringtone" that charted on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles at number 1. Fancy was quick to follow behind him with her self-titled track, "Fancy" that became popularized after airing in 2010 on VH1's Basketball Wives. After debuting on iTunes charts for their 2014 hit, "Breakdown" a rendition of Mariah Carey's 1997 hit, the duo came harder in 2015 with their club banger "Do it" from Fancy's wildly praised mixtape, "South Side" and again with "Somebody" from Envy's contagious Album, "Songs About Girls."

The group's first self released single "Talk About It" depicts an intimate conversation between two people. Written by both Envy and Fancy, the sultry vocals and clever lyrics paired with an even more addicting hook, will keep fans and listeners alike anxious for their debut album soon to follow. "Talk About It" sets the tone of iLLism's sound, something matured fans and new ones will be captivated by.

It’s no doubt that iLLism struck gold with this pairing. Respectively, They're only stronger together. Envy’s grittier rap and Fancy’s bracing vocals lead to a chilling mixture; Something that many artists strive to capture every recording session, and which iLLism seem to achieve effortlessly in all their songs. Hip hop and R&B can come together in a deadly and infectious harmony again. The great sound that iLLism has acquired is sure to resound across America in their promising future.
