Comedy Beyond Recognition hosted by John F. O'Donnell
Join us for a night of Comedy hosted by John F. O'Donnell, followed by live music from The Dust Engineers!
According to The Comedy Central Insider, "John F. O'Donnell is one of the more explosive comics in New York. On stage, he's like a tightly capped liter of soda filled with lit fireworks."
The Dust Engineers
Originally conceived to create the fictional home recordings of a nonexistent South Dakotan teenager, The Dust Engineers are in reality a new Brooklyn/Queens-based band. "Ask Bobby Zimmerman about inventing a persona," laughs Zachary Meyer, singer and guitarist. "Sometimes romanticization is better than the real thing." After performing at a Bowery Poetry Club multimedia exhibition, Meyer decided to make The Dust Engineers more than a fantasy, and enlisted Sara Maeder (vocals, tambourine), Erik Rosenberg (guitar, vocals), Jared Harel (drums) and Ryan Egan (drums) to form the band in 2011. Employing twangy bottleneck slides, coed harmonies, and reckless 90s indulgence, their new EP "Bail" was recorded live in the studio rather than by multitracking to a metronome. "One foot on a skateboard and the other in stirrups," replies Meyer when asked about The Dust Engineers' singular sound that proves tough to classify. "We strive for this natural, collaborative writing process, and we let the original vision guide us. We've got an imagined desert muse."
Brooke Van Poppelen
Brooke Van Poppelen is a comedian and writer living in NYC. She was an ECNY nominee two years in a row for "Emerging Comic" and "Best Female Stand-Up". She has also appeared on TLC's American Chopper as Mikey Teutul's comedy coach, and will be on the upcoming Comedy Central show Jon Benjamin Has A Van. Brooke has writen for truTV network, AOL's Lemondrop.com, Glamour and Details magazine.
Kate Berlant
Based in New York City, Kate Berlant performs her psychedelic, absurdist stand-up in some of the most celebrated alternative comedy shows in New York and Los Angeles. Her weekly show "Crime & Punishment" at the famed Lower East Side music venue the Cake Shop regularly features beloved comics like Reggie Watts, Michael Showalter and Janeane Garofalo. Often improvised, her stream-of-consciousness comedy often leaves people wondering what just happened to them– in a good way! Her act has been described as "if David Lynch did stand-up." She has performed her PowerPoint presentation, "An Illustrative Colonoscopy into an Epistemological Kitty Cat" in several NYC gallery spaces, and was selected by Brooklyn's 2011 SITE Fest as a featured performer.
