Nathan is 3-time Male Vocalist of the Year. He accompanies his beautiful vocals on guitar, sometimes interpreted by his beautiful dancer, Kelehua Kawai. He also demonstrates his extraordinary bass skills on his 8-string electric bass.
Nathan was born into a musical family and his early years were spent learning guitar, ukulele, piano, and developing his natural vocal ability.
In college he discovered a passion for the electric bass and he began accompanying performers such as Henry Kapono and Loyal Garner. He was Don Ho's bass player for 16 years.
In 2002, he released his solo CD, E Apo Mai, which earned three awards: Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year. Later, his CD, Bass Etude, focusing on the electric bass won the Hoku for Jazz Album of the Year.
For 8 years, Nathan was the principle singer of the group, Hapa, with leader Barry Flanagan. In 2005 Hapa released the CD, Maui, which won 4 Hoku Awards including the coveted Album of the Year prize. Nathan was again honored with the Male Vocalist of the Year award for his own solo release, making him the only Hawaiian vocalist to win this award three times.
In 2007 Nathan released second solo CD, Kane'ohe, which presents 12 original songs that celebrate Nathan's home on O'ahu. He played every instrument, sang all the lead & background parts, and engineered, mixed and mastered the entire recording.
Nathan's hula dancer, Kelehua Kawai, has enjoyed the art of hula since childhood. Growing up in Halau (formal Hula school), she danced in keiki hula competitions and later in the prestigious Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. She began choreographing, instructing and dancing professionally. She is grateful for the gift of hula and appreciates every opportunity to share her craft and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
It’s rare when an artist arrives on the scene offering a refreshing new spin on a traditional genre of music. Steven Espaniola is that artist. Raised in Aliamanu, Hawai’i and now residing in the California Bay Area, Steven is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in Ki Ho'alu (Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar), ‘Ukulele, Upright Bass, and Leo Ki'e Ki'e (Traditional Hawaiian falsetto). Of Hawaiian, Fili
pino and Spanish decent, his ethnicity is as diverse as his unique sound which preserves the integrity of the traditional with a flourish of the modern.
Through the years, Steven has had the pleasure of performing alongside some of Hawaii's top entertainers including Ho'okena, The Brothers Cazimero and Ledward Kaapana. Though an accomplished musician, Steven continues to grow as a humble student of Hawaiian music while contributing to perpetuate its legacy for future generations. Steven hopes to be a perennial mainstay in the Hawaiian music scene for many years to come.
His debut recording entitled Ho’omaka, “to begin”, features a mesmerizing collection of traditional and original Hawaiian mele recorded by Na Hoku Hanohano award winning producer Dave Tucciarone. Ho’omaka will be sure to transport the listener to the Hawaii of yesterday with soaring falsetto vocals, nahenahe slack key guitar and rhythmic ‘ukulele. Steven Espaniola’s highly anticipated and critically acclaimed debut album will carry you on a musical journey you won’t soon forget. In 2007, Steven's musical efforts earned him the recognition of "New Artist of the Year" at the Hawaii Music Awards.
