Here to challenge the music industry, 23 year old DC native Selina George is making a name for herself as one of the DMV's most adored independent artists. A most early introduction to music came when George was being raised by her grandparents, who influenced her music background with their love of playing old Motown records. Shortly after George learned to play the piano, guitar, ukelele and began writing her own songs. Over the last six years, George has cultivated her sound drawing inspiration from some of her favorite artists including the likes of Motown greats like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to some of today’s most popular artists; two of her favorites being Beyonce and Frank Ocean. Her experiences growing up in the DC area, which could be considered the epicenter of racial and economic diversity in the nation, has also influenced her unique style and sound.
George considers her genre to be neo-soul/indie. acoustically based, but not limited to just the acoustic sound, this brand of music highlights the quality of the lyrics and vocals. She has also ventured into other genres like electronic/dance music, rock, and hip hop and r&b. Drawing inspiration from all avenues of life, the themes expressed in her music always resonate on a very emotive level. Stories of heartbreak, self-acceptance, loss, and triumph are all part of her artistic catalogue. One can follow the process of her musical journey cohesively almost as if looking through a looking glass into her life. George has self-produced two EP’s and hopes to upstart her own label in the near future. Dedicated to artistic authenticity and creative freedom she woo’s audiences with her ethereal nature. Her performance style is intimate, honest and at the very least possess a most magical quality.
