Space Captain is a Brooklyn based psych-soul group singed to UK indie label Tru Thoughts and includes members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocalist/lyricist), Alex Pyle (bass and production), Gray Hall (guitar and production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet). They have appeared with BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah, Khruangbin, Palehound, Kendra Morris and more. Lauren Laverne of BBC Radio 6 Music calls them "really interesting...a sound of their own."
Their initial release, Easier / Remedy, a double A-side reissue of two early tracks, received heavy play from Don Letts (BBC 6Music) and new music guru John Kennedy on his XFM X-posure show. In a period of open-minded experimentation via live shows and studio jams, Space Captain have alighted on a progressive fusion of R&B and psychedelic rock with tentacles spinning out into soul, hip hop, electronica and noise. The In Memory EP finds singer/lyricist Maralisa Simmons-Cook exploring darker, more personal subjects with themes of mourning, the life cycle, lightness verses darkness, death and rebirth. In Memory has since seen notable play on Spotify's Fresh Finds Playlist, BBC Radio 6 Music and Bandcamp Weekly. Michael Gonzales (The Wire) wrote, "Space Captain's embrace of beauty is obvious. But it's nice to know they can get ugly when they want to."
Their new single “Sycamore” single brings an eagerly awaited taste of new music and an upfront glimpse of their debut album, All Flowers In Time (October 27). On this fresh new material Space Captain channel seemingly disparate genres into a stirring, progressive proposition laced with stealthily addictive hooks. Likened to the sounds of Townes Van Zandt and Wilco, Peyote Pilgrim is the band you want playing as you romanticize all of your past mistakes. With a dose of nostalgia, Peyote Pilgrim’s sound evokes good feelings, sweet love and a little rock and roll. You’ll shake your feet, you’ll think of someone special, and you’re beer might taste a little sweeter too.
Donovan Edmund Duvall aka Mr. Daywalker, born June 5, 1994, is a DC area based producer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and art director. His music is a blend of jazz, hip-hop, soul, indie, with added electronic elements. Inspired by J Dilla, John Coltrane, Fleet Foxes, Bill Withers, Flamenco and his Cuban roots. Mr. Daywalker carries the tradition of his relatives who toured around the world playing Cuban jazz in the forties and fifties, sharing the stage with icons such as Dizzie Gillespie and Miguelito Valdés . Mr. Daywalker joined his school’s orchestra at the age of nine playing percussion. During high school, at Sidwell Friends in DC, he played in the jazz ensemble, while at home he began creating and producing house music.
In college as a jazz percussion and performance major, he played with a jazz/hiphop fusion group, The Blue Roots Experiment, which sparked his interest in hiphop. This started his transition from house music to making beats. Making beats was the first step for Mr. Daywalker, and soon he was inspired to transition from beats to recording live instrumentation. He found that recording live instruments captured a more genuine sound, missing from just making beats. This discovery spurred Mr. Daywalker to teach himself piano, bass, guitar, and mandolin. Mr. Daywalker’s mission is to generate empathy and to create spaces that are beyond fear through music. He seeks to capture the human experience through his perception of reality.
Mr. Daywalker has performed on stages in NC, DC, NY, VA, WV, and OH including The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Serendipity Music Festival, and The Black Cat, and he has shared bills with Baauer, Beau Young Prince, DJ Inferno, Jordan Clark, and Space Captain. Mr. Daywalker is fresh off releasing his debut EP “Warmth” and busy working on his next project.
