Steel City Jazz Festival: Kalabash

Steel City Jazz Fest bio:

The Steel City Jazz Festival, now in its fifth year, is an annual celebration of the vibrant jazz scene in Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years the Steel City Jazz Festival has featured multiple Juno Award-winning musicians, National Jazz Award winners, Order of Canada recipients and some of Canada's most in-demand jazz talent. We are proud to showcase musicians from the Hamilton area and to work with the many great venues promoting jazz in Hamilton year-round. The Steel City Jazz Festival is sponsored by Smordin Law and NLP Canada Training.

Kalabash bio:

Kalabash is a Toronto based jazz sextet that features some of the most dynamic jazz musicians in the city: Colleen Allen (Wind Instruments), Gareth Burgess (Steel Pans), Joaquin Nunez (Drums), Anthony Pierre (Percussion), Michael Shand (Keyboards) and Andrew Stewart (Bass). While the individual members of the group all work in different collaborations, Kalabash is a true "Art" project for these musicians, where they get to stretch out and do really superb work, experimenting with the layering of rich jazz harmonies over the folk and popular rhythms of the Caribbean. From the groups two CDs it’s apparent that the result of this fusion is a scintillating blend of North American and Caribbean contemporary jazz expression. The combination of reeds and flute with the steel pans gives the group a special sound that always makes Kalabash a hit with jazz festival audiences.
