Ó is the recording project of songwriter and producer Gabrielle Smith. The project began in 2007 as an outlet for Smith’s experimental and noisy home-recordings. In 2011, Smith formed The Epoch collective with several other Brooklyn-based songwriters and artists, and began developing her sound over the years into the realm of more structured pop songwriting. Smith released her full-length album,O.K.,on Double Double Whammy in 2015.O.K.received wide critical acclaim, being called the #1 record of the year by the U.K. blog Gold Flake Paint, and was featured in NPR’s All Songs Considered’s Top 10 albums of 2015.Ó's latest recording,Year of the Rabbit, advances Smith’s sound further; the collection of songs was recorded mostly live by Emily Sprague and Felix Walworth, two fellow members of the Epoch, in their home studio in Brooklyn. The record is the first to showcase the sound of Ó’s live band as its primary sonic touchstone, replacing the highly produced and overdubbed sound of Smith’s earlier records with a more immediate, naturally produced sound.
Bellows is the bedroom recording project of songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. The sound of Bellows is sensory and delicate, subtle and quiet but erupting with frantic wobbling drums, large orchestral sections and bursts of noise that push the conventions of pop and folk. Started in late 2010 in a dorm room at Bard College, Bellows has since blossomed from solo recording experiment into a large-scale rock band, employing the help of The Epoch collective to bring Kalb's intimate home recordings to life on stage. The live band features Gabrielle Smith (Eskimeaux), Felix Walworth (Told Slant) & Henry Crawford (Small Wonder), each of whose particular sensibilities work to translate Bellows’ intimate recordings into sweeping, loud, and intense live performances. Bellows’ sophomore record "Blue Breath" was recorded over the course of three years, in five bedrooms across the country, and was released in 2014 by Dead Labour. The record was recorded by layering dozens of strange sounds over would-be humble folk songs, the result being a soaring pop record that treads the line between minuscule and gigantic. "Blue Breath" was named one of Bob Boilen of NPR's All Songs Considered's favorite records of 2014. Bellows’ upcoming third album “Fist & Palm” marks a drastic change in Kalb’s sound. Mixed by Jack Greenleaf (Eskimeaux, Sharpless), the record experiments with aggressive sequenced drums and electronic sounds, taking its influence as much from contemporary pop as it does from early 2000’s Pacific-Northwest lo-fi. “Fist & Palm” will be released in Fall 2016 by Double Double Whammy.
gobbinjr is Madison, WI-native turned lil nyc bb Emma Jerk Witmer's unapologetic new project. Her debut album 'manalang' is the blunt, peachy child of Witmer's angsty yet sophisticated approach, creating a bedroom-panorama of earwormy, hazy melodies. While a fair amount of music relies on the spark of collaboration, gobbinjr explores the simplicity of a one-mind/one-voice songwriting process. Witmer keeps to herself, thus she kept her album to herself… writing and recording every single detail of it. The result is one individual's unfiltered, unfettered statement, something so ethereal it nearly transports you into Witmer's own daydreamy world.
