The Grass is Dead
The Grass is Dead are a force of Bluegrass and Grateful Dead music. Pickin’ and grinnin’ is what they do best, and they have been adapting Grateful Dead songs in their own bluegrass style since 1998. Always a festival favorite, Grass is Dead is guaranteed to make you smile, smile, smile!!! With a few new members on the roster, the GID are having a blast introducing their new multi-talented band mates to new fans and Old and in the Way fans alike.
Originally formed in South Florida in 1998, The Grass is Dead are one of the original pioneers of the Bluegrass/Grateful Dead genre. Billy Gilmore, founding member of The Grass is Dead has cultivated a dedicated fan base for many years throughout his home state. The past two years have seen them ramp up their touring schedule extensively. In the summer of 2015 they decided to follow the Grateful Dead’s 50 year anniversary “Fare Thee Well” Tour and play various after parties and pre-parties across the country. They have developed a strong recognition in places as far north as Buffalo, NY and as far west as Denver, CO. The festival season of 2016 saw the Grass is Dead playing the Baygrass Bluegrass Festival, Leftover Salmon’s Blue Ridge Jam, Hickory Fest, Cornstock Fest, Roots Revival, Suwannee Hulaween and most recently a grassroots festival organized mainly by members of the Grass is Dead in the Everglades called Swamp Side of the Moon. Between their strong social media presence and their Facebook Street Team Group “Team Grass”, they have been able to showcase their talents up and down the east coast and bring in substantial crowds even to cities that they are performing in for the first time! Billy Gilmore is well recognized by fellow bands and musicians as a musical virtuoso and accomplished multi-instrumentalist. Over the years, Billy has shared the stage with such greats as Sam Bush, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, David Gans, Sue Cunningham, and Jeff Wisor just to name a few. Grass is Dead are ready to bring their happy sounds to new cities up and down the east coast in 2017!
Grass is Dead have 3 albums on Spotify and you can hear them occasionally on Sirius Radio via the Grateful Dead Channel. (Grass is Dead Vol. 1/Built To Grass Vol. 2/Twenty Degrees of Solitude Vol. 3.) Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were picked up by Grateful Dead Merchandising.
The Grass is Dead has over 80,000 downloads of live recorded material from over 15 years of shows on archive.org
"At the core of The Grateful Dead is the heart of American music, which is bluegrass and folk. You cannot hide behind these two genres. What you get in the studio is what you get onstage. And it's that vulnerability and honesty that sets the tone and attitude apart from the haphazard and polished nature of pop radio. Putting their music through the prism of string music, Grass Is Dead showcases how Jerry & Co. buried innumerable gems of wisdom — sonically and spiritually — in the rich tapestry of their melodies and lyrics, all of which radiates in intimacy and inclusiveness of Grass Is Dead when they stand in front of the microphone, and also the unknown night of curiosity and exploration that they seek out and grasp with such ease."
— Garret K. Woodward, Music Editor - The Smoky Mountain News
“I have made music with Billy Gilmore off and on for more than 15 years. He is a sensitive and expressive musician with a great attitude.”
— David Gans-Musician /Host of the Grateful Dead Hour Radio and co-host of SiriusXM Grateful Dead Channel
“Playing with Billy Gilmore has always been a privilege for not only is he an accomplished master of all stringed instruments, from guitar (electric and acoustic), to mandolin, banjo, fiddle, pedal steel, and dobro, Billy is also one of the most joyful stage performers. Always engaging the audience and his fellow musicians and always ramping up the fun factor to a higher level. Billy Rocks!”
— Pete Lavezzoli – drummer from Melvin Seals, Jerry Garcia Band, Phil and Friends and Crazy Fingers.
