Atlanta-born and raised singer-songwriter and former drummer Sharon Lewis founded Deep River in the summer of 1992 in Connecticut and was joined in late 1992 by Connecticut native, Sandy Howard, an accomplished singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist; together they moved to Nashville in April 1993 where they spent a decade pursuing a major label record deal. While there Sandy and Sharon recorded two CDs of original material, contributed to a compilation CD of women artists, and co-wrote eight songs, two of which, 'Civil War' and 'Silver Eagle', received “Honorable Mention” from Music Row magazine's country music historian, Robert K. Oermann. After hearing Deep River sing their song, 'Remember Always', live on the Bell Buckle (Tennessee) Jamboree Radio Show, local resident and Country Music Hall of Famer, Charlie Louvin of The Louvin Brothers, told the vocal group, "I'd like to hear y'all play that song on the Grand Ole Opry." Although they haven't yet had that opportunity, Deep River did get to sing with another member of the Country Music HOF, Vince Gill, and opened for country star Mark Wills as well as the 'Mother of Bluegrass', Wilma Lee Cooper. In the end, though, the record deal never materialized.
Drawn by the Blue Ridge Mountains, inclusive culture and folk art tradition Lewis and Howard moved to Asheville in April 2003. In 2007 Lewis picked up the bass guitar and with Howard began recruiting the current line-up starting with vocalist, Joan D’Entremont in February 2007 with whom we create our signature three-part harmonies, followed by multi-instrumentalist Gerry Brown on dobro, rhythm guitar and pedal steel; in-demand drummer and Asheville Music School instructor, Justin Watt joined in 2008, followed by in-demand lead guitarist and AMS instructor, Alec Fehl in 2016. Deep River made its Asheville debut in August 2007, and will celebrate its 10th Anniversary at The Grey Eagle on Saturday, August 26th, which will also benefit the Asheville Humane Society! As a bonus Deep River will be joined that night by guest artists Bob Bencze, keyboardist with The Bill Mattocks Band, and Joe Trimbach, fiddler-mandolinist with Bobby & Blue Ridge Tradition.
To make this evening a special celebration Deep River will be be performing 80's and 90's country music by Patty Loveless, Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers, Highway 101, Kathy Mattea and The Forester Sisters PLUS the greatest hits of the EAGLES and LINDA RONSTADT and a few of our Nashville originals like 'Civil War' as played on KISS Country 99 right here in Asheville.
