Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.
Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the organization Nancy started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Across the country, that promise is upheld by a network of 122 local Affiliate offices. At the heart of each Affiliate is a person or group of people who, like Susan, wanted to make a difference.
Nancy G. Brinker started Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in 1982 in Dallas, Texas in honor of a promise she made to her sister Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of survivors and activists working to end breast cancer forever. Komen for the Cure is 125 Affiliates strong, located in cities and communities across the U.S., Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico.
More than 100,000 survivors and activists of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® are the face and voice of the global breast cancer movement-local activists and global citizens who mobilize millions through events like Komen Race for the Cure Series, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created.
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®
Through programs like the Komen Race for the Cure Series and other fundraising and awareness events, Komen Affiliates raise tens of millions of dollars each year to help achieve the organization’s promise: To save lives and end breast cancer forever. Each year, seventy-five percent of proceeds are awarded through a grant process to local non-profit organizations. Each grantee conducts a program that offers breast cancer education, screening or treatment to residents of Fresno County. The remaining twenty-five percent is directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Grant Program to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research on a national and international level.
Serving Fresno County Since 1999
Breast cancer survivor, Carolyn Montez Jorgensen read about the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® in a running magazine. Dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer, Carolyn and passionate volunteers hosted the first Komen Central Valley Race for the Cure in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the Affiliate was incorporated. Since its inception in 1999, over $2.3 million has been invested in community-based programs for education, screening and treatment. Over $600,000 has supported the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Grant Program for breast cancer research. Learn more about Carolyn
Jimmie-O and the Same Old Sorrow
All original music for now, written by Jimmie O himself. Includes an eclectic combination of instruments: banjo, mandolin, bari and alto sax, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, drum kit and a variety of percussive pieces. Their music has been known to both make mothers weep and drunk women squeal in joy!
PieceMakers was formed in Clovis, California by Conor Moriarty. Conor had spent much of his time as a musician playing solo shows and trying to get a name for himself based upon his solo acoustic work. After recording an EP with Hilscher Gardens (an underground recording studio in Fresno) he felt it was time to branch out and start a full band with songs he had set aside for a separate project. One by one, each member was added until they had what they felt was a complete family. During an early practice, while playing one of Conor's songs, Nick made the observation that each member "brings his own pieces to the puzzle" and makes the song come together in a unique way.
Mercy Fists
Mercy Fists is an Alternative Rock band from Fresno California. Formed in 2009, the band has taken over the Fresno music scene as the next upcoming alternative rock band. With the recent success of their first self titled album, which came out November 2010, the band has been able to land a great deal of attention with the local radio stations such as Broken FM and continued their success with the local music scene. Thanks to the collaboration from Chris Hudiburgh (Lead Vocals/Bass), Brett Posch (Guitar) and Kaleb Smith (Drums/Vocals), the trios are currently working on the second album with hopes of having it completed by July 2011.
