Poor Man's Whiskey
"In the end, they are an original distillation, a tasty burn that goes down with a kick and lingers beautifully when it hits your gut."- Dennis Cook, Jambase.com
Poor Man's Whiskey plays "High Octane Hootenanny" music…Dance, laugh, sing.
Emerging from the San Francisco bay area music scene this quintet has developed a sound that is eclectic and engaging. PMW has been winning over national audiences with their upbeat performances, zany stage antics, and infectious songs. While seamlessly integrating acoustic and electric instruments the band weaves tales of everyday life, inviting the audience to become a part of each show.
PMW has released three studio albums, "Train to California" (2003), "Roadside Attraction"(2005), and in 2009: "Dark Side of the Moonshine" (a double disk set featuring original music as well as the bluegrass interpretation of the Pink Floyd classic album).
Notable festivals and shows: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Kate Wolf Music Festival, The Fillmore, SF; Harmony Festival; Strawberry Music Festival; The Great American Music Hall; The Summer Melt Down, Las Tortugas; finals of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
Representing five generations in North America, Ronstadt Generations continues the family’s musical traditions. Started by Michael J. Ronstadt (younger brother of Linda) and his sons, Michael G. and Petie. Multi-instrumentalists and solo performers in their own right, they present an exciting repertoire that preserves the traditional Southwestern and Mexican songs of their heritage while offering innovative original material. New compositions place them on the cutting edge of multiple, blended genres, stretching the boundaries of folk, blues, jazz and beyond. Rich harmonies sung in English and Spanish are accompanied by outstanding cello and guitars. Individually and together, Stateside and across the pond, the trio’s worldwide touring and recording credits include such diverse artists as Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, Dixie Hummingbirds, David Bromberg, Nydia Rojas, Tish Hinojosa, Muriel Anderson, and Mariachi Vargas, to name a few.
In 2012 three veteran musicians – Alex Flores, Sam Eagon and Aaron Emery – came on board with versatile talents to form the six-piece ensemble Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses (the Tucsonans). First performing with Ronstadt Generations at a local Tucson gig, the sextet cemented the relationship with the recording Prelude. Alex, Sam and Aaron bring to the table a variety of experience and influences. Playing tenor saxophone, bass and drums, respectively, they add a colorful dimension to an already powerful presentation that respects tradition while exploring innovation.
Michael J. Ronstadt passed away on August 7, 2016. His sons and Los Tucsonenses carry on his musical legacy with Ronstadt Generations Y Los Tucsonenses
Dirty Cello...cello like you’ve never heard before.
From China to Italy, and all over the U.S., Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues and bluegrass. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist, Rebecca Roudman, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. From down home blues with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin’ bluegrass, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping!
"Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Lou Fancher, Oakland Magazine.
"The band plays every style imaginable, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing—it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist." Good Times Santa Cruz
"The group seamlessly careens from blues to bluegrass and rock in a way that really shouldn't make sense but somehow does." LA Times
Since 2005, Frobeck has been astonishing audiences throughout Northern California with their unique blend of Pop, Funk, and Rock music. With high-octane vocals, life-altering songs, and world-class musicianship it was only a matter of time before they launched to the forefront of the Northern California music scene. In 2008 they won a North Bay Music Award (NORBAY) for Best Rock Group and also won first place at the Mystic Theater Battle of the Bands in Petaluma. They have shared the stage with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, Trombone Shorty, Papa Grows Funk, Los Lonely Boys and many other nationally recognized acts. Boasting a full lineup of bass, drums, guitars, keys replete with sultry backing vocals, Frobeck covers all the bases. With the recent addition of an earth-shaking horn section, Frobeck has entered into the realm of their musical heroes: Tower of Power, The Sons of Champlin, and Stevie Wonder. Frobeck is sure to get your blood pumping, booty shaking, and your groove grooving.
Everybody Has Their Turn is a deeply vibrant collection of songs put together to bring the fire and honesty of Heather’s presence on stage to life in the living room of the listener. Produced and performed by Heather herself, the thirteen-song album was recorded and mixed in a not-so quiet little room within the San Francisco city limits. This is her 5th full-length official release and follows 2008’s Strike a Match, which brought to life “My Mistakes” – a finalist in both the John Lennon and USA Songwriting Contests.
Heather Combs, a Gainesville, Florida native now living in California, is a powerhouse on stage. A little bit reckless, a little irreverent but mostly wielding an authentic heart – put her on a stage and within minutes she can turn the eye of a new batch of faithful fans. Her voice is sweet and then rough, strong and then vulnerable, but always honest and true. She plays guitar with reckless abandon and isn't afraid to show the listener who she really is. And now Combs brings us Everybody Has Their Turn, an album packed with all the passion and personality of her live shows.
In her fifteen+ year career, she has shared the stage with many fantastic musicians such as Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Steve Earle, Sheryl Crow, Kasey Chambers, Todd Snider, Los Lobos and the Go-Gos. Heather’s songs have been featured in hit TV shows such as ER and Grey’s Anatomy. She is fiery, funny, intense and not afraid to take risks. Having been named “Best Band in the Bay” by San Francisco Magazine twice and a part of KFOG’s Local Scene CD, Heather thrives on connecting with the audience and Everybody Has Their Turn is the perfect extension of that.
