Newly formed Bokanté is the brainchild of Snarky Puppy founder Michael League. Trading in his bass for baritone guitar in this group, League brings together eight musicians from four continents to create a diverse ensemble rich in groove, melody and soul. The band’s debut album, Strange Circles (GroundUP Music), combines West African music, Zeppelin-esque blues and Caribbean kaladja with singing in Creole and French. With Snarky Puppy guitarists Chris McQueen and Bob Lanzetti, lap/pedal steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier (Karl Denson), percussionists Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon, Sting), André Ferrari (Väsen) and Keita Ogawa (Yo-Yo Ma), and vocalist Malika Tirolien.
Greek-born singer/accordionist Magda Giannikou is a musical chameleon who breezes through everything from French-Brazilian hybrids to collaborations with the Kronos Quartet and Snarky Puppy, Greek folk tunes, and Columbian cumbia. Her incredibly tight New York-based band mesmerizes audiences with their brilliantly coloured performances and forays into six different languages. Their music hearkens back to the golden age of Brazilian bossa and the lush chic of vintage French pop. Magda's special performance will include Snarky Puppy's Michael League bass, Keita Ogawa percussion, and Chris McQuenn guitar.
