Clockwork Kids
Clockwork Kids are an alternative rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina formed in February 2012 by lead singer/songwriter and bass guitarist Justin Ellis. Though originally intended as a temporary outlet for musical expression, the band gained popularity in the UNC- Chapel Hill community and quickly established itself as one of its premier student bands. In summer 2012, the band was rounded out with guitarist Jeff DeLuca, guitarist/ keyboardist /soundscapist Chris Petto, guitarist/ bassist Patrick Carney, and drummer Mike Carney. The band has since been busy writing material, recording demos, and recently completed their first tour around the state of North Carolina. With a sound described by the INDY Weekly magazine as "a [reverent] take on early R.E.M.", the band aims to combine the massive three-guitar approach of bands such as Radiohead and Shearwater with the more introspective lyricism of bands like Elbow and The Cure, with a decidedly 90's shoegaze-tinged flavor.
"The band's shows make it obvious that its five members are not only talented musicians, but talented showmen as well. Whether leading with a soothing acoustic guitar or a manic electric, the band's deft blend of vastly differing guitar styles is bound to put you on your feet." - Carolina BluePrint
Cowboy Indian Bear started off like most bands; in search of a name.
When members CJ Calhoun, Beau Bruns and Marty Hillard came together they couldn't decide on a band name so they traded a buddy a six pack of beer for the one they settled on. For the Lawrence, Kansas-based trio, the name was essential. With featherweight melodies, ghost-like echoes and whirring rhythms they create an ethereal celebration that is tempered with a tinge of classic rock/pop. Reflective of the free association ethos of the music, Cowboy Indian Bear stands as the perfect name for its sprawling, ambitious sound.
Hawley Shoffner
Hawley Alexandra Shoffner can surely be forgiven for tallying up late fees at the local library. Her eloquent songs for piano and ukulele often take inspiration from biographies and historical events, but they're artfully timeless in their dedication to good melodies and spirited performances. Her articulate piano playing may surprise folks who only know her as the ukulele-toting madam who dispensed the competition in the 2008 Farmer's Ball. The Wichita native also wields a mean accordion and a temperamental kazoo.
