The wildest genre mashup of the year, THE LURE has been understandably beguiling fest audiences around the world and now it arrives to enchant Philly for one night only. Not just another 1980s-set Polish killer mermaid musical-horror film-black comedy-fantasy, THE LURE is also an exploration of female sexuality at its most captivating and its most malevolent, as well as a look at the bonds of sisterhood. In her feature directing debut, Agnieszka Smoczynska spins the yarn of beautiful mermaid sisters Silver (Marta Mazurek) and Golden (Michalina Olszanska, who also appears in another 2017 CFF title, I, OLGA HEPNAROVA), who wash ashore in Soviet-era 80s Poland, where they are quickly employed to be cabaret performers in a sleazy nightclub ("exotic dancers" doesn't begin to cover it). Their fins transforming to legs on dry land, the sea siren duo soon find themselves at odds when Silver's seduction of a metal musician becomes something more than just another flirtation-turned-dinner (the mermaids like to feast on humans). And we did mention that, amidst the abundant nudity and bloodshed, it's a full-blown musical, right? Colorful Jacques Demy-influenced dance numbers abound, but this is less LA LA LAND meets SPLASH, and more a synth-pop SWEENEY TODD meets an aquatic DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS. -- Travis Crawford

"The strangest release of the young year.” -- J. Hoberman, New York Review of Books
