Stephen Paul Smoker
Arts of Life Band, Rough House Puppet Theater

A Lancaster, PA native, musician Stephen Paul Smoker began his career at an early age, honing his craft as a touring musician and hired gun for bands like MewithoutYou and the Mint. After releasing Violent Sun / Violent Fun, Stephen joined forces with musicians Michael Kostal (Guitar), Bethany Smoker (Keys/Vocals), Evan Depue (Bass), Jaime Dull (Drums), Gerald Bailey (Trumpet). Ripe Fruit is the first collaboration involving the full band.
The Arts of Life Band makes danceable party music with a rock edge. It is an ongoing collaborative project between disabled and non-disabled artists in the Chicago area, based out of the Arts of Life community of artists.
The Arts of Life Band performs at local events and fundraisers, and does rock concerts at venues such as the Hideout, Empty Bottle, and the Double Door.
Artistic Director Ryan Shuquem has collaborated on artistic development with several performing groups including Mucca Pazza, the Parkas, and Circus Ridiculous.
After headlining the 2011 National Puppetry Festival with Ichthyodyssey: a Fish Puppet Rock Opera, Rough House has turned towards small scale adult puppet theater. It's current show, Murder Ballads, is an intensely intimate penny arcade of five musical tales of murder. Through peepshow-like detail, Murder Ballads provides a harrowing, humorous and heartbreaking close-up of humanities most basic fears, and basest urges.
