A World of Women's Voices

A WORLD OF WOMEN'S VOICES is a powerful, unique, collaborative performance, featuring three NYC-area artists — SHARON GOLDMAN, BEV GRANT AND duo VILLA PALAGONIA — who celebrate the power of women’s stories from around the world, from Italian folk tales and biblical stories to African women, New York immigrant history (including the Triangle Fire), personal/childhood narratives and labor movement anthems.

The evening offers audiences an enriching personal and community experience--not only through the stories told in our songs, which we artists knit together by illustrating how, even with our different backgrounds, we all are essentially connected, but also through encouraging the audience to sing along with us — and in some cases, dance!

SHARON GOLDMAN: Sharon’s latest solo album, KOL ISHA (A Woman’s Voice) is a bold, unique song journey merging Jewish imagery, myth and memories with a modern, feminist perspective. “An extraordinary effort to explore what it means to be a woman in general and a Jewish woman in particular through song,” — Wanda Fischer, WAMC’s “Hudson River Sampler”

BEV GRANT: A veteran social activist, feminist and labor singer/songwriter, Bev Grant is also the founder and director of the Brooklyn Women’s Chorus. Her song “We Were There” has become an anthem of women in the labor movement. SingOut Magazine calls Bev’s work "unhesitatingly fervent, unflinchingly personal.”

VILLA PALAGONIA: Multi-instrumentalist and singer Allison Scola, along with her husband, multifaceted guitarist Joe Ravo, created Villa Palagonia, which calls upon their southern Italian roots and American know-how — Allison’s paternal grandmother, who immigrated to New York in the 1920s, grew up in Bagheria in the shadow of Villa Palagonia. Their eclectic, acoustic pop brushed with hues of Mediterranean folk offers an “irresistible combination,” says WFUV’s John Platt.
