In 2007, Kina wrote her song "Message From Your Heart," shot a video in her bedroom, and uploaded it to YouTube. A few months later, the song won her a major label recording contract and aired during the Super Bowl in front of its 97 million viewers. Kina soon forfeited the record deal, choosing instead to self-release her album and keep creative control. Her debut album - Stairwells - debuted on Billboard's Top 200 chart (and #2 on its new artist chart) due in large part to her devoted online following. To date, Kina has amassed nearly 180 million video views, accruing nearly 1.2 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, thanks to unforgettable videos for her original music, including "Valentine" and "In Your Arms." The latter earned Kina visits to The Ellen Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live and was named one of the Top 10 videos of the year by Time Magazine. Kina has headlined tours around the world, selling out shows from New York to Los Angeles, London to Berlin and Sydney to Tokyo.
Kina's sophomore album - Elements (via Kina Grannis Records) - written entirely by Kina and produced by Matt Hales (Aqualung), marks an undeniable maturity in songwriting and artistry and documents a period of growth and change in Kina's personal life, complete with an honesty and a vulnerability that she's excited to share with her fans. The music is dark and driving, sweet and soaring, melancholy, humble, heartfelt and hopeful.
Imaginary Future is singer-songwriter Jesse Epstein.
Here's what happened. Jesse married his high school sweetheart of eleven years, fellow musician Kina Grannis.
Up until this point, he had written a bunch of sad, slow songs. But something changed. The wedding was the culmination of so many years, an exhilarating marker of happiness and progress. In the months surrounding the occasion, Jesse reflected on how far he and Kina had come. She had shaped him. She had changed him. She had pushed him to become a better person every day. He owed everything to her and he needed to express that.
And thus came Sunlight, his new album, a love letter to his new wife. He had barely written a happy song in his life, and here, all of a sudden, was an album of pure joy. Eleven love songs, one for each year of their relationship.
