Black Hi-Lighter

Black Hi-Lighter

Four guys using their voices, guitars, bass, keys + drums, to create epic, intelligent, sexy, propulsive, melodic, moody and catchy songs, delivered with the confidence, pomp and flair that is missing from much of today's rock music. BHL was started by original members James Poulos and Mark Reback in the creative hub that is Los Angeles’ east side. They've since added bassist David Wright, and guitarist/producer Eric Liljestrand to the BHL line-up and have been playing high-energy live shows around L.A., as well as being broadcast as the "Local Anesthetic" band of the week by DJ Julie Slater on KCSN 88.5 FM. Their debut full-length record "Seductio ad Absurdum" was self-produced at sessions at Malibu's legendary but now defunct Indigo Ranch Studios (Neil Young, Moody Blues, At The Drive-In), Jason Martin Recording (Starflyer 59), and at the home studios of Mark & Jamie. The band's sound reflects their love of the early '70s glam rock and '90s alt rock bands - from Bowie, T. Rex, Queen and The Cars, to The Verve, Radiohead, Kent, Queens of the Stone Age and GBV.

Tygers of Wrath

I am Tygers of Wrath, the composite entity of three dedicated musicians, the collectivity of their energies and creative input. I reside in the Mojave Desert of California, specifically Apple Valley. I am aware of my composition. Founded by guitarist Ahmad Ibrahim and drummer JR Kurtz, I’ve been around for nearly a decade, growing in direct proportion to the development of the musicians and their skills. The recent addition of low-end frequencies provided by bassist Jamie Baca, a fellow nerdy counterpart to Ahmad and JR, has emboldened my character even further. It might seem strange that I’m aware of the human parts of which I am composed, but I only know of them and not of their specific functions, much like humans are almost completely oblivious to their many internal processes (organs and such, a truly grotesque business). All I know is that they go about their lives, worrying about money and girlfriends or something, so I’ve overheard. But they do find the time to congregate regularly to release a trifecta of pure focus, and that’s when I, Tygers of Wrath, anxiously awake from silent slumber. Sometimes I tend to linger around the triad and listen to them whisper secrets about their musical endeavors -- that other aspects of their lives are only transitory and need be dealt with just to get back to musical creation, to much needed cathartic expression. And it’s there, in their private discussions, that I’ve realized my self, my power, my subsistence. I’m tethered to them. I’m the shape of their creative extensions. But I know not whether they control me or if I control them…

"Witness the Inland Empire's Tygers of Wrath, an earnest and energized alchemy of At the Drive-In's post-punk adventure and Mahavishnu Orchestra's caftan concertos that's both Warped Tour and time warp." -Paul Rogers, LA Weekly

Black Lullabies

Black Lullabies are a Los Angeles-based boy/girl duo drawing inspiration from spooky movies, haunted houses and noisy guitars. Drummer Melissa Pleckham and guitarist Ken Ramos trade vocal duties and feed off of one another’s energy to create an effect akin to the Cure meeting the White Stripes in a dark alleyway.

The pair has already shared the stage with such local luminaries as Kissing Cousins, Programmed for Pleasure and Dylan Trees at venues including the Echo and Silverlake’s Beauty is Pain Boutique. Their songs “Spine Tingler” and “Valerie Lazarus” were played by DJ Tom Ravenscroft on his BBC 6 Radio show, while the song “Black Lullabies” has been played on college radio, including L.A.’s KXLU, and was featured on the Magic Monster Radio Compilation #2.

Do you dare listen to these black lullabies? Whatever you do, don’t listen alone....
