Road To Indie Week: Alberta - Round 1 - Calgary

SIN Agency presents Road to Indie Week: Alberta, a series of showcases that take artists out of the digital submission and put them on stage in front of industry professionals. A total of 8 Alberta Indie bands will compete at the finals. The grand prize winner and 3 runners up will showcase at Indie Week Canada in Toronto this November to be The Best of the Fest.

Scruffy Fish

ince 1993 Roger Duncan has been making music in Calgary and around Alberta. Over this time he has created groups such as The One World Drummers and The Urban Tribe. Having recorded 3 CD's over the years Roger decided to create a new sound; one that starts in Africa and travels through a sonic journey covering Jazz, Blues, Folk and pop blending a sound that is lifted by lyrics that provoke thought.


Based in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove, Alberta, Thistle is a rolling, quick-paced acoustic country/rock band with stripped-down, catchy rhythms, and hooks that dig deep.

Diverse influences from across the musical spectrum give Thistle a unique sound and style that’s sure to grab hold and take you to new places.

Kevin Frey (vocals, guitar) has been a mainstay on the local music scene as a solo performer since 2013. Kevin was one of three finalists for the 96.5 CKFM Olds All Hit Country Star Search in 2015, and was an opening act for Dog Rump Creek Music’s second anniversary party, headlined by Adam Gregory and Jake Matthews, in 2014. Jason Frey (drums) and Trevor Henson (bass) have played music together since 1999, and were founding members of heavy metal band Dead Ring. Jason and Trevor joined Kevin in September of 2015 to form Thistle. Steve Findlay (guitar, vocals) also joined the group in mid 2016 to add an extra dimension to the sound with an electric guitar and a strong voice.

The group is working on an album for release in 2016.


Born in London, Onatrio and moving to Toronto at the age of 8 with his family. Carter Cook developed a love for hip hop during the summers in a day care program bringing mix tapes and a beatbox and having dance battles once a week. Shortly after this He moved to Calgary Alberta with his family over time getting into writing, sing and rapping. A member of Calgaies hip hop crew Roman66 and a Solo Artist Carter Cook A.K.A Silver/Coop found a niche in the Hip Hop scene with his atmospheric and heavily personal raps and writing.

Hailing from southern Alberta, Adam Dorval (Vocals), Mat Trickey (Bass), Eric Campbell (guitars), and Dan Clayholt (drums and percussion) rallied in 2011 to take a stand against music that was getting louder, dumber and more repetitive. With lyrics that make you think and beats that make you move, Cable Street has been shaking things up in Canada’s alternative scene where they’ve been referred to as “local favourites”, and “the next Killers, but with better vocals”.

Jason Cote & Rolling Thunder

Calgary based singer/ songwriter Jason Cote has a gift for storytelling that captures the imagination of his listeners. His descriptive lyrics and melodic vocal lines all delivered with raw emotion, have a way of transporting his audience to places that are at once both familiar and new.
Influences strongly rooted in country and folk artists of the recent past, along with his forays in rock bands across Canada, has molded Jason’s own personal sound. A lifetime of experiences both good and bad, have culminated in songwriting that is straight forward and honest, delivered with Jason’s passionate vocals that captivate audiences with every performance.
