French/Finnish duo The Dø – aka Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy. New album 'Both Ways Open Jaws' out now.
After spending two years honing their craft, the band released debut album 'A Mouthful' in 2008, which saw them land the prized no.1 album spot in France.
Hot on the heels of this celebrated release, French born, half-Finnish Olivia and French born Dan embarked on an international tour, filling venues in cities from LA to Istanbul, Australia to Paris and gaining an impenetrable cult following in the process. Shortly after, they holed up alone in their Paris studio and began work on second album, 'Both Ways Open Jaws', which is to be released in the UK on November 14th.
Inspiration for this album was pooled from an array of disparate sources; minimalist trailblazer Steve Reich, The Dead Weather and surrealist Japanese cinema all had a profound effect on the record's genesis and long, contemplative walks in the woods helped the pair to gain clarity and perspective.
Boom Chick is a rock n' roll duo consisting of Frank Hoier on guitar & vocals and Moselle Spiller on drums. Boom Chick's sound is born out of an ecstatic love for early American rock n' roll. They have released one full album to date, and have completed two across America tours and one European tour since they named their band in 2009.
Frank was already a seasoned songwriter and solo act before he met artist Moselle, and found in her a wily, high energy co-conspirator. Boom Chick was soon fully realised after a hectic year packed with countless sweaty loft parties, constant creation in their industrial Brooklyn practice space, & hard-charging tours.
Their performances of lovingly practiced original co-written songs beam with a confident hunger.
With their raw and passionate live show, Boom Chick has been known to melt cold, cold hearts and set folks to dancing in the aisles. Moselle attacks the drums with a ferocious femininity, and Frank's amplified howl slaps back to the era when a man spoke his mind, creating a sound that delivers on all those things that rock n' roll promised us so long ago.
"Show Pony" (released November 2010) is shot through with all the love and bones you can pack onto two-inch tape, and revels in Frank & Moselle's myriad influences, from their shared love of atomic 50's rock n' roll, spooky Delta blues, reverb-laced surf rock and 60's girl group melodies, to the bright torches they carry for the classic catalogs of Chess & Sun Records.
Frank and Moselle are currently plotting a series of 7" records, their second full album release, and third across America tour for Fall 2011.
Thurlow is comprised of husband and wife duo, Jacqueline Caruso and Augustus Green. The couple began honing their musical skills together five years ago on the East Coast, but are now based in the burgeoning LA neighborhood of Highland Park, where theyʼve joined forces to create their own brand of lo-fi indie pop with a DIY aesthetic.
Thurlow are currently in the midst of releasing their Walking Hearts single, a collection of warm melodic indie electro-pop confections showcasing a breadth of influences ranging from The Beatles, Portishead, and Broadcast to their life long love affairs with blues and jazz. Effortlessly blending strains of pop and electro beats, along with divergent vocal harmonies, Thurlow generate a layered and textured sonic soundscape with uniquely structured songs, while still maintaining the pop sensibilities they know stand the test of time. This combined with a songbook of tracks musing on the trials of love and life gives their sound a heartfelt and personal quality.
Their varying backgrounds unite to aid the development of their distinct sound; with Jacqueline's roots in classical piano and musical theater, which she studied at American University, contrasting Augustus' lifelong exploration of electronic music, synthesis, sound design and music production. The title track of their Walking Hearts EP highlights the strengths that Green and Caruso bring to the duo. With Greenʼs intricate sound design and Carusoʼs mesmerizing melodies, Walking Hearts proves that this duo is one to watch.
Having shared the stage with the likes of Barcelona, The Heligoats, and The Sweet Hurt, Thurlow recently returned from their first West Coast tour with Zaptra in November in support of their first EP, Spokes, available on bandcamp and itunes, as well as the new Walking Hearts EP.
"Husband and wife Augustus Green and Jacqueline Caruso as Thurlow make friendly guitar/keyboard melodies. Then they add Carusoʼs soaring, take-notice vocals and instantly bring them to a whole new, beautifully unique, level. They share the mic on the debut Spokes EP, but it is always a perfect combination of a little bit sci-fi and an overflowing ton of sunshine." ~ YVYNYL, Philadelphia
