Former solo artist Keith Varon's new band, Angels Landing, generate enough power live to fuel a fleet of SR-71s to otherworldly spheres and beyond. Thundering verses, towering choruses, and transcendent melodies ignite this flight, and if the band's debut EP, 'Magnetic,' is any indication, the fleet is gone for good.
Hailing from the CIty of Angels, Angels Landing are a rock / pop trio comprised of Keith Varon - vocals / guitar, Kyle Grant - bass, and George Lind - drums. Vocalist Varon's solo work has been featured on acclaimed MTV shows such as 'Laguna Beach,' 'The Hills,' and 'NEXT,' alongside ABC's 'What About Brian,' and E!'s 'Paradise City.' Varon has also toured extensively throughout his career, opening for a slew of notable artists, including Fastball, Edwin McCain, Vertical Horizon, and Stroke 9. Moreover, Varon is an established songwriter / producer for Radar / BMG publishing and has worked with the likes of Clinton Sparks (Interscope), Stars in Stereo, and Robert Marvin (Adam Lambert, Mat Kearney, Kelly Sweet).
Bassist Kyle Grant, formerly of the pop / punk band Coexist (Finger Records) and drummer George Lind - of The Higher (Epitaph Records) and Josiah Leming (American Idol) notoriety - round out the group, a seasoned rhythm section who've collectively been a mainstay on the Vans Warped Tour since '07, opening for countless world-renowned acts in the process. Grant (aka Fantom West) is also a budding producer / composer in his own right and has worked with bands such as Leaving July, Hazard of the Industry, and Coradina. Likewise, he has collaborated with music supervisor David Ari Leon (Marvel, ABC, Fox), composing numerous scores and soundtracks, including the 7-song electro soundscape for 'Robot Race,' a heavily anticipated game app from Easley-Dunn Games.
Angels Landing recently teamed up with producer Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow), resulting in their debut EP, 'Magnetic.' Released in early '12, the sizzling 6-song EP features "Reset," "Parachute," and the title track "Magnetic," among others. Music videos for "Reset" and "Parachute" were shot in February '12 in Southern California and are scheduled for release in April '12.
eENIK is a musical collaboration founded by producers Blas (bass) in 1998 and Craig Laubach (vocalist, lyricist) who joined the band in 2004. From its origin as a progressive rock-based group eENIK has grown into an eclectic, hard rock outfit known for bending genres into pop sensible music. eENIK’s early recordings were co-produced by Tye Zamora of Alien Ant Farm notoriety. In late 2010, Zamora officially became a member of the band. Drummer Jon Rizk has also been a creative component of eENIK since 2008.
The band draws its influence from a broad spectrum of artists, often taking a ‘visual’ or cinematic approach to composition. The 2009 release Oddomatic features flavors of their progressive-esque riffage, pop arrangements and signature production elements that strongly reference the band’s interest in electronic artists. Initially compared to bands such as Primus or Faith No More, eENIK has emerged to offer a sound uniquely its own.
Their track ‘Passive Attack’ (featured on Oddomatic) appears on a compilation produced by Roadrunner Records artist discovery label called The Best of SignMeTo Roadrunner Records (2011). An upcoming and currently untitled release from the band promises to offer what eENIK does best: delivering megalithic rock anthems that triumph over the boundaries of genre. Expect to hear edge balanced between melodic poise and lush, evolving soundscapes. The energetic live show takes the stage again in mid-2011 as the band debuts its new material.
Barbarian Overlords, with its mixture of rock/blues artistry and break-your-jaw fury, is a melodic assault on modern music. Guitarist Joe Spadaro and drummer Brandon Kachel began the journey – one looking like he just stepped out of a time machine, the other out of a wrestling ring. When they cast their net to find a lead singer, it fortunately ensnared Brent A. Nuffer. GK Via was willing to trade in his guitar for a bass to become the fourth member, and in February 2011 the lineup was etched upon a tablet of rock.
After paying their dues and sharpening their chops touring Southern California, Barbarian Overlords released their self-title album on December 3, 2011. Several months later, they unleashed their first music video, for the track "In a Rush to Meet the Queen." Both projects were self-funded, showing the group is savvy as well as talented.
Barbarian Overlords continues to claw its way up the food chain, playing some of the most famous venues in Los Angeles. Their sound is powerful and pleasing, as Spadaro displays masterful guitar work that complement the group's hard-hitting rhythm section. Meanwhile, Nuffer's vocals evoke both soulfulness and playfulness. Listeners are never sure which genre the band will dip its toes into next. One thing is for sure: Barbarian Overlords are providing the kind of pure rock and roll that has been sorely missing in the world.
