Celestial Shore
Celestial Shore have an obvious Beach Boys tip about them, but they twin it with a love of Math Rock - the twisting guitar and synth patterns snake around like a loose hose, drenching the song in a shimmering nostalgia. It takes the simplicity and innately classic sound of The Beach Boys harmonies and filters that through the clutter of the 21st century. It means it avoids being yet another yesteryear trip, and becomes something truly inventive. To paraphrase the great Jean Luc Godard, it's not who you steal from but where you take it.
Whale Belly was formed by Todd Bogin and Nick Smeraski in 2010. What started as two friends' experimentations in songwriting and recording has turned into a debut album called ...The Smile at the End of the Slope, an intense, raw mix of determined folky-blues-rock which has been receiving enormous praise. In their short existence, Whale Belly has toured as a supporting act for nationally-known bands, been featured on various radio stations, and gained a cult following around Brooklyn with fun and rollicking live shows.
Team Genius
CMJ said: "It doesn't take exceptionally high IQs to realize the power of bouncy synths and endless falsettos, but it helps," while L Magazine put it this way: "Their material reveals a band with a sophisticated understanding of pop music, honing in on gliding harmonies and bright, boxy choruses." Either way, we agree.
Il abanico is an upbeat post-pop band created in 2010 by Nicolás Losada (guitar) and Juliana Ronderos (Voice). They expose their personalities with innovative melodies, an upbeat rhythm section and unorthodox guitars. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, this duo spent fall of 2010 composing what would become their first work "Crossing Colors" (February 2011). A 5 songs EP, recorded in well renowned Studio G (temporal studio for the Black Keys) in Brooklyn, NY.
Established in Boston MA, and playing around the east coast area, Il abanico started to play with a full band. The new band members captured the attention of many blogs and interviews because of their diverse nationalities.
Il abanico has grown rapidly, and in September 2011 they toured their way across the US from Boston to LA where they have now settled. It was a successful 18-date tour which included cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, San Diego and Los Angeles, amongst others. Having played over 60 shows this year, il abanico is currently living and working in LA, performing and writing material for their new album.
il abanico will be a SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist.
Starlight Girls released their debut single "Gossip" in Feburary of 2011, catching the ear of some very influential players, including Joanna Newsom who covered the song and bolstered the curiosity about its authors. This show celebrates the release of their new EP, which promises to shatter the grapevine and introduce the world to a powerful new songwriting force.
