Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles
the Lost Caravan, Lionized
Take a pinch of mountain gypsy, a dash of psych-folk and a combine it with an ocean of split-open-and-melt lyricism, intricately delivered by one of the most unique voices in music, and you have Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles. Since bursting onto the Twin Cities music scene in 2008, the fiery sextet have blossomed into one of the most celebrated and cherished young talents to emerge from Minnesota in recent history.
Lucy Michelle and The Velvet Lapelles’ incredibly polished, yet wholly organic, sound can be directly attributed to an interweaving familial-like chemistry that has created an airtight bond among the six players. The band formed in 2007 as a result of casual jam sessions that were led by Lucy with friends Geoff Freeman (drums), Ashley Boman (accordion, bells) and Jesse Schuster (bass), at Lucy and Geoff’s University of Minnesota college flop house in NE Minneapolis. Loosely arranged social gatherings, where music was played, eventually turned into full-blown band practices and writing sessions with the additions of Eamonn Mclain (cello) and Chris Graham (guitar).
So go the playful opening lines off Lindsay and the Lost Caravan’s debut EP, You Don’t Know Me. It’s a fitting message from the relatively unknown artist whose music is making people stand up and take notice. Based out of the same Denver, CO neighborhoods that helped spawn The Fray, Lindsay Meredith is poised to put the Mile High City on the map yet again.
Blessed with sultry vocals and catchy songwriting abilities that could easily have been used for saccharine-sweet pop, the songstress instead fused her radio-friendly sensibilities with a raucous gypsy jazz flavor to create something entirely new. Described as “…KT Tunstall meets Man Man”, Meredith has coined her distinctive blend of pop-rock, jazz, and Balkan influences: Gypsy Rock; a style as exotic and lively as the artist herself.
Her new-found sound came as a sudden awakening and since that moment, she’s wasted no time preparing it to be unleashed upon the public. Tirelessly developing her first EP, she set about gathering her roving band of gypsies, The Lost Caravan. Together they bring stages alive with weaving guitars, alluring violins, and bewitching vocals; evoking moonlit images of a crackling campfire encircled by mysterious women hypnotically sashaying their pleated skirts to the beat of the music.
Lindsay Meredith now has what she wants and she’s on the move.
Lionized is Matt James (vocals, guitar, violin) and Melanie Karnopp (drums, percussion, vibraphone and backing vocals). Using an eclectic mix of rhythms and instruments Lionized quickly en captivates audiences with a mix of folk, Americana, indie and even punk rock style.
