The first thing you need to know: Big Dick does Little Richard. No, that's not a headline from a satire piece or muckraking exposé; it's a statement of fact. Big Dick is a blazing L.A. funk-soul septet featuring the searing vocals of Kate Flannery — yes, a lady. But when she sings, "Baby, don't you need a man like me," your response will undoubtedly be, "Yes." (And besides, Richard is more than a bit of a gender-bender himself.) Hardly the stuff of an ironic covers act, Big Dick plays worthy tribute to the Architect of Rock & Roll, counting among its arsenal two honking saxophones, some madly tinkling ivories and Airborne Toxic Event's Darren Taylor on drums. Fittingly, the Pukes is a long-running project founded by Airborne bassist Noah Harmon, who here steps into the spotlight as the black-clad and utterly lewd lead singer of his very own country & western Misfits cover band. The Hanks (Tribute to Hank Williams)
theHanks! are a modern tribute to the late great Hank Williams Sr. Like a tumbleweed rolling through downtown Los Angeles, the essence is vintage but the setting is edgy. Playing in a traditional Country & Western style, theHanks! bring a young vibrant energy to the classic songs by the Granddaddy of the genre. Don't expect the arena rock
polish of modern pop-country; these kids are sticking to the roots and prefer to deliver their toe-tapping ditties on the front porch or a smoky dive bar.
Fronted by Texas-born, Angela Arnold, whose delicate southern draw strikes a perfect balance between sweet and sassy. She's backed up on stage by a strong group of LA musicians which often feature slide guitar, fiddle, and harmonica. You'll enjoy all the classic "tears in
your beers" Hank tunes that you already know, and will surely get turned on to hidden gems that'll get you honky tonkin' on the dance floor. Yeehaww!
