The New Music Series
This event was created to continue to pull together the scene here in Philadelphia. A scene that we all are proud to be a part of, dedicated to, and create within. Promoting the whole show, supporting all the bands/musicians, networking, and learning more about the people around you who share the same passion for music is what this night is all about. We appreciate each act sharing their music with us and putting their own stamp on the North Star's New Music Series.
The Warbirds got their start back when Ulick, Brian, and Jerry were in high school as Silvertone in January 2000. While the whole world was freaking out about y2k, these guys were freaking out everyone in PA with their righteous riffs and irresistable melodies. Silvertone eventually became FSP about a year later. They toured locally until fall 2002 when they split to pursue other musical ventures including HighKick, and legendary Scranton band Palindrome. After nearly a decade apart the three friends crossed paths yet again, this time even more driven and determined to change music forever!
Something Like A Monument started out as a musical union between Don Custer and Jamie Shemanski. The two met in music theory class at Manheim Central High School. With their mutual love of prog rock, blues and jazz, they chose the name "Something Like A Monument" from the King Crimson song "Dinosaur." In the summer of 2007 the duo recorded an ep entitled "Hymns from the Attic". It was 5 tracks with Jamie on drums, vocals and guitar, and Don co-writing the songs and playing bass. In 2008 Jamie moved to Philadelphia while Don pursued his education in Pittsburgh. The group took a break. Flash forward to 2011. The duo is back together and working on new material for a follow up EP to "Hymns from the Attic" as well as building a following in the Philadelphia area.
When Ryan Hickey and Brad White started jamming together in 2006, it was far from serious. They recorded their music with a laptop--improvising everything on the spot--and didn’t pay attention to song structure or rhyme schemes. It may have been all fun and games at the time, but little did either of them know that what they had in common would grow into something more than a music project. That their collaboration would become a band. That their band would write and record songs. That their songs would give them the opportunity to play with a national headliner.
To record Come Get Some, the band sought out up-and-coming engineer Joe Bunting, whose credits include mastering work on Brand New’s latest album, Daisy. What resulted from the time with Bunting was a noticeable growth in The Resort’s sound; they became more than just a pop rock band, expanding into genres they had not previously explored. One of the stand-out tracks on the EP, Count the Days, resembles a rock song of the 90’s, while the beat-driven anthem Rumor (a collaboration with Mike Graybill) sounds like it could be heard at a club. Each song has its own vibe, but collectively, Come Get Some represents the growth of The Resort as a band and their constant push to outdo themselves.
A musical project from the Camden County area that rose from the ashes of the thrash/punk/ska band, The Smokestacks. Also featuring ex-members of The Shake Up! and The Gnome Liberators, we aim to blend the passive- aggressiveness of punk and pop-punk, the upbeatness of ska and throw some folksey grooves with some relaxing vibes ontop.
Although we've only been around for a year, we've made our mark in the local music scene in the South Jersey/Philly area, as well as sharing the stage with legendary ska and punk bands such as: Mustard Plug, Flatfoot 56 and The Toasters.
