Los Angeles-based band Dot Hacker to release eponymous debut EP on February 21st, followed by first full-length album, Inhibition later in 2012.
The music of Dot Hacker is architectural, built on a foundation of bold, manipulated tones and supported by lush eclectic textures and angular rhythm. The band's enigmatic sound comes from the collaboration of friends and founding members, Josh Klinghoffer, Clint Walsh, Eric Gardner and Jonathan Hischke. Before forming Dot Hacker in 2008, the four were already established musicians, recording and touring with an impressive list of respected artists including: Beck, Gnarls Barkley, PJ Harvey, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Butthole Surfers and Broken Bells amongst many others. Klinghoffer, the band's lead vocalist, also currently plays guitar in The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band plans to play shows in 2012 to support the release of their debut album.
Yellow Red Sparks
A tortured soul, particularly that of a closet poet - or in the case of our protagonist, a songbird in a dark cage - can only find solace when pen meets paper or the cover to the cage is lifted and the door left open. Without these outlets, a daily breakfast of prescriptive meds is oftentimes the only means of survival for such an individual, as it quiets the mind from its former state of discontent. Such is the story of a young man from Irvine, California, Joshua Hanson, the son of a lounge singing mother who passed on the genetic predisposition of melancholia to her son.
From the age of fourteen Joshua spent the next ten years living 'comfortably numb', until finally at the age of twenty four he literally flushed the chemicals from his home and decided it was time to 'feel' life, not simply get by. Josh picked up a guitar and one note at a time plucked out a song, convinced that he must release the poetry locked in his head by way of melodies that, until that point, were only songs of the heart. The words and music flowed like water, and Yellow Red Sparks was born.
Enlisting the talents of upright bassist PJ Wyderka and drummer Darren Goldstein, two talented local musicians that needed a muse, the trio began working in earnest on crafting Joshua's songs and preparing to record an album. The songs of Yellow Red Sparks quickly found local ears, and when Thrice's lead singer Dustin Kensrue stumbled across the music he sought out Joshua and immediately took him out on tour. Los Angeles based producer Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Flogging Molly, Bouncing Souls) discovered Joshua and his music as well and asked if he could record the band's debut cd 'with or without a label behind the band'. Grammy award winning mixer Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Avett Brothers, We Are Scientists) caught wind of the project and came on board for the final mixing, and thus the commercial story of Yellow Red Sparks begins. The lyrics of Joshua's songs are personal and at times clearly autobiographical, which is ironic for a man committed to keeping his private life private but now telling his stories on stage in front of an audience. After a recent Yellow Red Sparks show, writers described the bands music as "filled with beautiful acoustic melodies and gentle vocals" (Untitled Records) and a sound that is simple but never simplistic" (OC Weekly), and of the message behind the music, one writer noted that "Joshua has the lyrical mind of a playwright" (groupee.com).
The Yellow Red Sparks story is just beginning to unfold, yet Joshua and his band mates, though excited about all of the interest in their project, are clearly patient knowing that they have a long career ahead of them. To quote the lyrics from one of Joshua's songs, "this life's a circle with 10,000 hurdles; don't jump them all just yet".
The Chuck Dukowski Sextet
The CD6 is a family band. Chuck and lead singer Lora Norton are married, and guitarist Milo Gonzalez is the eldest of their four children. Milo is a guitar virtuoso who started playing with his parents when he was just sixteen. In addition to the blistering electric guitar he plays in The CD6, he is a masterful Spanish and flamenco style acoustic guitar player. Milo is also a professional acrobat and contortionist who can backbend during his guitar solos. Singer Lora Norton is a visual artist who creates the band’s striking album cover art. She also has amazingly long hair (mid calf length!). Drummer Ashton Slater is a powerhouse and musical genius.
The Chuck Dukowski SEXTET’s bass player, Chuck Dukowski, was a founding member of Black Flag and wrote many of their most popular songs such as My War, What I See, Spray Paint and more. Chuck was a co-owner of SST Records and was instrumental in releasing the music of many bands like The Minutemen, The Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Saccharine Trust and others.
The members of Capgun Coup are not the most well-versed students of rock music. The story starts three years ago in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, where Elsasser and Martin began playing music together. Mutual boredom and an interest in avant noise would fuel the duo's early collaborations, but after a move downtown and after the addition of two members, Capgun Coup became less interested in white noise, and completely enamored with pop. The result is music that is as much an homage to basement shows and house parties as it is to the indie pop tradition.
Mike Watt & The Missingmen
Michael David Watt (born December 20, 1957 in Portsmouth, Virginia) is a singer-songwriter and bass guitarist, best-known for co-founding the punk rock bands The Minutemen and fIREHOSE; as of 2003, he is also the bassist for the reunited Iggy Pop & The Stooges. He is also a member of the art rock/jazz/punk/improv group Banyan.
Though Watt has not had much mainstream success or visibility, he is often cited as a key figure in the development of American alternative rock; The Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their hugely successful Blood Sugar Sex Magik to Watt. Throughout his career he has been known for his inventive, melodic playing; his basslines are often quite distinctive.
