Stanton Moore Trio
Flyjack, Boogaloo
The Stanton Moore Trio with Will Bernard (guitar) & Wil Blades (organ) guarantees a high energy deep in the groove performance that will blow the lid off Antone’s in a rare one-off performance on Saturday June 16, 2012.
The Stanton Moore Trio is arguably one of the tightest, most original and accomplished funk/rock/jazz organ trios in the world. The melodies will have you humming the next day as you remember the unique rhythm transitions that built on the next - delving between peaks and valleys until they crescendo and at the end of the end you thought “what the heck just happened?!
It is all about the players:
Stanton Moore – drummer, educator and founding member of immensely popular New Orleans’ band Galactic, originally started his trio with Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars, 20th Congress) & Will Bernard. Following the trio’s 2008 release of III, Modern Drummer called Moore’s trademark sound “infectious, jazz-meets-Bonham, nouveau second-line.” Next up was Emphasis! (on parenthesis) and then Groove Alchemy. This band is for real. Since the release of these albums Moore has attracted organist Wil Blades to join in the tour rotation with Walter and you will see why.
Will Bernard - guitarist and Grammy nominated jazz composer is a brain-child, songwriter and groove-maker behind this trio. Bernard when not performing with his band The Will Bernard Trio, is a mainstay performer and entertainer with T.J. Kirk & Dr. Lonnie Smith. Of late we witnessed Will Bernard’s on-stage performances with the likes of Greyboy Allstars and Medeski Martin & Wood at their festival appearances. Will Bernard is a force to be reckoned with and it wasn’t surprising to see these bands pick him to share the stage. His high energy on-stage presence has evolved – he kills it, brings it home and puts it on the table….
Wil Blades - organist and controller of the 400 pound beast the Hammond B3, Wil Blades adds brilliance to the trio songs with his footwork on the bass pedals. His left handed bass with utterly amazing melodic improvisation brings a fresh in-the-pocket contribution to this band. Wil Blades is notably the Bay Area’s best - now not-so-secret musical genius. Recently joining with Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood), the Martin/Blades Duo is on the jam scene and touring this summer. We are lucky to have Wil Blades perform with this Stanton Moore Trio Austin Texas one-off.
Supporting the Stanton Moore Trio are Austin local groove purveyors of funk and soul: Flyjack and Boogaloo who will get this party started for what is sure to be a performance of the summer. In an interview which is widely available on youtube, legendary funk percussionist Jab’o Starks explains the James Brown sound in raw terms - “for the beat, you hit the ‘ONE’ to say we’re here!” He ought to know – as Browns’ drummer, he was the co-architect of such classic hits as “Sex Machine,” “The Payback,” and “Super Bad,” securing for himself a place in the funk Hall of Fame. In 2009, FLYJACK’s bassist Brad Bradburn formed a friendship with Starks, and asked him to perform on the group’s first release for Hammondbeat Records. The result is “On the One” – an EP so heavy with 70’s funk power you may need a forklift to get it home.
FLYJACK is the brainchild of guitarist Buck McKinney and bassist Brad Bradburn – former members of the groundbreaking Austin, Texas instrumental funk group Gnappy, which released three critically-acclaimed albums from 2001 through 2006. Named for the Richard “Groove” Holmes song of the same title, FLYJACK draws its inspiration from the hard-hitting funk of the late 60’s and early 70’s – bands like the JBs, Mandrill, Rufus and the Bar-Kays. Joining FLYJACK for “On The One” are Italian Hammond B-3 maestro/Hammondbeat Records label-mate Paolo “Apollo” Negri , and electrifying Austin, Texas vocalist Tameca Jones.
“One the One” kicks-off with the title track, featuring Starks’ lean stick-work, percolating Wurlitzer, and a hook that digs in deep. Barn Burner is a chunky dance floor workout with soaring vocals, pulsating bass, ominous horns and a psychedelic mono-synth outro. James Brown classic Ain’t It Funky Now is fueled by amazing solo performances from Negri, McKinney and the Hellfire Horns – clocking-in at an epic 6 minutes. Tell Me What You Want ups the dance floor ante with a heavy four-on-the-floor beat, dueling vocals, echo-driven guitar and seductive Fender Rhodes. The record ends with an alternate version of On the One – a heavy-strutting, Rufus-influenced affair conceived by Starks during rehearsals for the EP – the perfect ending to this funk masterpiece.
Take a musical trip around the world with this trio of multi-instrumentalists! From soft classic Jazz at your dinner party to New Orleans style Swing, Boogie, and heart thumping Latin-Funk dance music, guests will enjoy our versatility and sophisticated sound.
Our musicians are world-schooled, having worked with recording artists Tito Puente, Michael Franti, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Karl Denson, Robert Walters, Cyril Neville, Maceo Parker and more.
