DJ Earl Gateshead
Earl Gateshead is the selector and leader of Trojan Sound System, the official sound of Trojan Records. Since its creation in 1968, Trojan Records has led the way in presenting the very best in classic Jamaican sounds. The labels releases have featured the cream of Jamaican talent, with the likes of Bob Marley & The Wailers, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Toots & The Maytals and The Inner Circle all included on its illustrious roster.
Earl began DJing in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton. He was heavily influenced by the Trojan releases of the time. Today Earl Gateshead and Trojan Sound System tour the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of Reggae music. Recent shows include Glastonbury, Bestival & Rototom Festival and club events at London’s biggest venue Fabric, where he was the first Reggae DJ to play. In July Earl will be the first Reggae D.J to play the worlds most prestigious club , The Terrace at Space in Ibiza, where he will play at their most popular night 'We Love."
Earls career began in the late 70s, when in the Spirit of the times he built his own Sound System and installed it at the world famous Dive Bar in Soho, where he established a respected reputation throughout London. Earl's 22 year residency at The Dive Bar, was sadly bought to an end in 2002 when the venue closed. Throughout the later part of his Dive Bar years Earl became the Saturday night resident at clubs such as the internationally acclaimed Blue Note and later Fabric, where he became the resident Reggae specialist.
In 2000 Earl began to organise and perform at a series of events called “Reggae Nights”. This legendary series of concerts received world wide attention, with performances from international legends such as; Alton Ellis, Dennis Alcapone, Adrian Sherwood and Saxon Sound System. This run of great success gave Earl a huge boost in profile, which lead him to be one of the most sought after DJs in the country and in high demand from international Reggae artists. He then went on to tour Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks amongst others.
With such a distinguished career and fantastic attitude Earl has become a figurehead in UK Reggae and in 2002 he was invited to give a lecture at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy in Sao Paulo. Earl gave a comprehensive lecture on Reggae DJing and recorded a radio show for Red Bull. Earl current runs a monthly event in London called “Rootikal” at the East Village Club alongside his co-resident and long term friend David Rodigan.
Hot off tour with Grammy winning dub legend Lee Scratch Perry, Subatomic Sound System's latest release is a genre bending, political scorcher featuring Anthony B entitled "Dem Can't Stop We From Talk" recorded in Africa, NYC, and Jamaica with remixes from producers around the world. Founded at the turn of the millennium, New York City based Subatomic Sound System has built a reputation worldwide for forward thinking production, explosive shows, and breaking down barriers with conscious topics and their forward thinking adaptation of 1970’s Jamaican sound system culture and dub reggae studio techniques to a wide variety of current bass music genres, technology, and live performances. Subatomic Sound System releases have been seen topping various vinyl and digital charts in the past years spanning from dub to dubstep and everything bass heavy in between. A few of Subatomic Sound System's notable releases include their wild collaboration with Dubblestandart to produce Grammy winning dub reggae innovator Lee Scratch Perry's first dubstep tracks, eclectic collaborations with icons like filmmaker David Lynch, Prince Far-i, & UK punk pioneer Ari Up of the Slits, as well as unusual electronic projects with new school reggae torchbearers like Anthony B, Elephant Man, Jahdan Blakkamoore, and Dubblestandart. A record label, DJs, production crew, live band, and event promoters, the Subatomic Sound crew is at work in NYC on every level. Subatomic Sound System and the Subatomic Sound label are spearheaded by Emch, as producer, selector, musician, and also the host of Subatomic Sound Radio which blasted out over the years to a footprint of 11 million terrestrial listeners in the greater NYC area via KEXP's MoGlo broadcast on Radio New York, 91.5fm, and on the internet via Brooklyn Radio. Subatomic Sound System has toured throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Russia. In 2008, Emch was recruited by top ranking live dub band, Dubblestandart, to play guitar and melodica on tour worldwide with Grammy winning legend Lee Scratch Perry, reaching from capacity crowd shows at New York's Central Park to Europe's largest reggae festival, One Love in Poland.
